My take is that they have a cutting-edge package that could be a game changer of sorts if they pick the right war and enemy to fight. Otyher weapons will be adapted or modified to use the 6.8x51 cartridge, so logistics may be streamlined some. I have heard that NATO will go that way too.

The M-16/M-4 (in 5.56 NATO) will be kept, so there will be flexibility built in to the reserve stock of weapons.
Holy crap ICU812, that's the most interesting gun youtube video I ever watched. How did the
American Rifleman leave me so ill-informed? An explanation of how they manufacture a 2-metal cartridge would be of interest to me. The lower-pressure 'practice' cartridge looks kinda ho-hum for civilian use, and I don't see the high-pressure one ever getting to the civilian market. Out of my price range anyway, but fascinating.

Default Wonky but lucky

Yeah, the math seems wonky. BTW: It's not a suppressor - it's a hearing protection device Luckily they didn't paint it black, as that would make it scary looking and cause the anti-gunners endless anxieties.

Blasphemer!! Side note: one round of .300 win-mag through a hearing protection device and you can barely touch it. After two rounds it's too hot to touch at all.

Very interesting video. Thanks for supplying it. Adoption in combat arms is going to prevent women from carrying it... so any part of the forces still using the M4 are gonna get labeled the "bitch" forces.

Related, but tangent to the OP:

Saw this video and thought it should be posted here. Not sure if it is a rteal event or staged for Twitter, but it is entertaining.

To the OP, it is the bullet that does the damage. The weapon is the delivery system. What does a suppressor have to do with anything? Built in or not?

I have a 5.7 X 28 mm PISTOL. The bullet is small and very fast. It will go through levels I and II body armor. Remember, it's a pistol and not an assault rifle...whatever that is this week. Oh, it also holds 30 rounds.

I remember back in the 90s, Maryland passed a law making it illegal to sell any armor piercing ammo. They kept using the "cop-killer" bullet scam. It passed (and subsequently repealed) and over a hundred different types of bullets were banned from 44 magnum, 30/30, and 50 BMG. they all ran afoul of the imbecilic definition of what "armor piercing" ammo was.

interesting video of the new M-5 rifle with its 6.8mm ammo.

bet that has to do with the issues with the 5.56 ammo.

The Video talks about the rational for the new cartridge: penetrating advanced body armor. So, yeah it does have something to do with the current ammo.

They are keeping the M-4 and its 5.5 NATO cartridge though. In talking with combat veterans from Viet Nam through the Iraq/Afghanistan wars, they say that at ranges within 300 yards (or meters if you insist) the M-4/M-16 and the 5.56 will really mess you up. The new rifle and ammo will do that at extended ranges even if you are protected.
