Funeral Escort question?

Do these rented escort motorcycle cops have any legal right to stop traffic or force you out of the way.
Had two of the do it to me in I-45 near NASA. They pushed everyone out of the mid and right lane. Seems like a easy way to cause accidents!

I remember we used to pull over, get out of the car and pay respect.

Its his/her last ride and although the rent a cops get out of hand sometimes it is best to just shake it off and move on.

intersection prior to and following the presence of any part of the funeral procession in the intersection

Growing up I was always told out of respect always pull over and turn on your lights so that the precession coming in your directions see you are paying respect to their dead.

They're not just rent-a-cops - the City of Houston requires funeral processions to have a police motorcycle escort.

Sec. 45-253. Police escort.

Each funeral procession shall be accompanied by a police motorcycle escort which shall be a part of the funeral procession and the police officer's motorcycle shall constitute an emergency vehicle when the siren and red lights are in operation. There shall be not less than one police motorcycle escort when the vehicles in the funeral procession, including the mortuary vehicles, do not exceed ten and there shall be not less than two police motorcycle escorts when such vehicles exceed ten.

Good for them. If you are so obtuse that you do not understand what happened was because of what you did, or failed to do; other officers should have been called to take you to jail and stand before a judge.

You are pointing a finger at the escorts? You question the authority of the "rented escort". Wow, don't you realize that off duty cops used for funerals and store security still have the authority of a police officer?

Same here. I still do it if it won't cause an accident. I know when I've been in one, I'm always impressed by this show of respect.

Think about it, dude. You don't want traffic interrupting a funeral procession. Say half the drivers in the procession get caught behind terrible traffic, while the hearst is way ahead with the body. They make it to the chapel, as well as a few of the cars immediately behind the hearst, but 20 other cars are still stuck in traffic, scattered about with non-attendees in between them.

What if everyone doesn't know the way to the chapel? Are they going to wait for everyone to get there, or are they starting the funeral on time? So on and so forth.

Friends and family are dealing with enough already. The last thing they want is complications in traffic that could offset the day's events.

I get the "pay your respects" aspects, but this the 2000s for crying out loud. That stuff may have been okay back in the 50s, 60s and 70s when traffic congestion wasn't as bad. Also, we now live in a higher paced world. I don't have time to stop for a damn funeral procession. I've got places to be and operate on the concept of "just in time" delivery. Some of these damn processionals go only 15-20 mph on roads where the speed limit is 45-50mph. People have GPSs and shit. They can find there way to wherever they are going or get directions.

I don't mind the traffic escorts for funeral processions. Let the family and friends have unobstructed access to their dearly departed's resting place. May he/she rest in peace.

What I do have issues with (and I know I'll get flamed by the motorcycle community) are the motorcycle club convoys that go out on weekends and feel they must travel together, so they take it upon themselves (no official police escorts involved) to stop cross-traffic, in busy intersections, through multiple red lights. Don't know about other cities, but it happens frequently in the KC metro.

I honestly don't think you get the pay your respects aspect.
