The simple transaction of paper between two consenting people.

They can.

Automatic bill payments are the only reason I never have late fees. Seriously, before companies started allowing me to do this I'd would have to argue with my leasing offices to allow me to give them enough post-dated checks (dated for the 1st of each month) to last the whole term of the lease. My credit cards, insurance, utilities and other sundries are all set to automatically withdraw amount needed. Did your parents never talk to you about finances or something?

SA Angel, the only problem with that setup is that you give the recipient of the payment complete control over your bank account to withdraw whatever they want.

A few years ago they made an error (an extra digit increases the amount tenfold!) and it took me seven phone calls and 2 weeks to get the money back. You have no recourse whatsoever with the bank, as they are "not involved", so if the recipient doesn't cooperate, good luck!

Ever since I pay all my bills with Quicken online banking which is very fast and easy and the payment is ALWAYS initiated by me.

Of note, the above does not happen if you have automated payments from a credit card, as you can cancel payment from your credit card. However, a lot of recipients do not accept credit card payments as they have to pay a fee.
