Very good point, Flecti. There is often some group with a social or political agenda lurking behind stats like this. Always best to do a little research and see who is funding the research.

Also, 10,000 cases each year sounds like a lot, but this is a country of about 310 million people, so it's not as if it is exactly an epidemic. You're more likely to get killed by a drunk driver.

In the past 30 yrs in the medical field, I don't remember seeing more than one or two cases of oral cancer. In the past year, I have seen 6 cases of oral cancer that resulted in death. All 6 were men, between the ages of 35-55. They all used tobacco in some form. I'm not sure how many were HPV related.....wish I knew. Yet another reason to vaccinate kids before they became sexually active.

A similar article came out in 06 that said if you had over 5 oral partners you were a high risk for cancer. I was sitting in the doctor's office being diagnosed with neck cancer as I read the article. Just smiled and said I'd rather get cancer from that rather than smoking.
