What he did and allowed to happen to his son was outright unforgivable. Sadly, he would never be given the opportunity to make amends to his family for being such a terrible person that last 15 years of his life. I think he was just starting to get his shit together when he was murdered. Who knows what sort of person he could have ultimately become.
It's really quite something to me that I am now older than he was when he was killed given that his murder and the attempted murder of President Reagan were some of my earliest childhood memories.
