This aphorism can be amended slightly for certain members of Congress to say, “It’s what you do when you think the cameras aren’t rolling.”
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York posed this week for an outdoor group photo wearing a mask. However, footage of the event apparently shows the congresswoman unmasked both before and after the photo was taken.
Ocasio-Cortez posed on the steps of the U.S. Capitol alongside Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts and protesters calling for an extension of the COVID-19 eviction moratorium.
Markey showed up masked. Ocasio-Cortez, on the other hand, was unmasked in the group before the photo was taken, which is fine considering she is fully vaccinated and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains fully vaccinated people do not generally have to wear masks outdoors.
But then it was time to take the group photo, and Ocasio-Cortez weirdly decided to make a point of wearing her mask, according to footage published by
Breitbart News.
"Housing is a human right," the group said. Another person chimed in, "Everybody say ‘whiskey.’"
The photo was then taken.
During the photo, Markey is seen pulling down his mask so that it rested on his chin. After the photo was taken, Ocasio-Cortez appears to remove her mask entirely and then goes back to making small talk with the group of protesters.
What’s the point here? Why whip out the mask for the photos but not for all the glad-handing with the eviction moratorium demonstrators? Why whip out the mask at all outdoors, considering the congresswoman is fully vaccinated?
It all seems like pandemic theater. It's the appearance of compliance and “responsible” social distancing, but it’s all for show. Then again, if we’re being honest, this is about par for the course for our leaders in the nation’s capital.
