PBS has an interesting (to mr) program "Finding Your Roots" that researches the genealogy of celebrities. In one episode, and I can't find the link just now, an African American who is prominent in entertainment, confronts his family's past as slaves in the antebellum South. He is deeply moved by the tragedy of it.

Then the host asked him. "How does that make you feel?" , nd the guest thinks for sa few seconds and says something like, "I am profoundly saddened . . .but I also feel fortunate .". And it is evident that he means that while recognizing the injustice of his family history, he now can access all the benefits and opportunities of American Society and Culture as they exist today.

I really wish I could find a solid link to that.
