Default "Paying For It"

A comic about a familiar subject.

Quote:
Paying For It is a memoir of Brown's experiences with prostitutes over the course of the last 14 years. There are a great many of these trysts, each one making up a separate chapter. Brown alternates these explicit but entirely unerotic depictions of sex with scenes of himself in conversation with his cartoonist friends about his prostitution habit.

Brown believes that prostitution is a logical and healthy choice for him, and the women he engages, to make. His friends disagree, for a host of reasons. Paying For It is, at its cool, affectless heart, an argument for a deeply unpopular position, and as such it seems destined to become one of the most controversial memoirs of the year, graphic or otherwise.

The included excerpt is a situation that may also seem a bit familiar.

Also - I *always* bring supplies. That way, if I hear, "I forgot xyz," all I hafta say is, "no problem - I brought it."

Vyt, thanks for this link. The NPR story was very interesting. Here is an interview with Mr. Brown in the Montreal Qazette http://blogs.montrealgazette.com/201...chester-brown/
and a link to Amazon for the "graphic novel" itself:
http://www.amazon.com/Paying-Chester-Brown/dp/1770460489/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid =1305407727&sr=8-1

I think most people outside of our little community resist the idea of pay for play being other than an unacceptable deviance, regardless of their political, religious or economic beliefs, because we all come out of the family system and live in a larger society based on regarding the family as the primary unit, whether it actually works or not.

Interesting, is it art or recouping some of the money he spent?

Folks:

I liked the description of Chester Brown's book Paying For It so I ordered it from Amazon. It arrived yesterday and I'm up to the third chapter on page 69 now and can recommend it to anyone interested in pay for play from either side of the transaction. Interesting and funny. While the dust cover describes it as "a comic-strip memoir about being a john" it is more nearly a graphic novel with the scenes and characters drawn rather than described. It's a very low keyed presentation, like the author, apparently. A "non-fiction novel" with notes in the back to elaborate on what the characters say without derailing the narrative.

I think a lot of customer guys would recognize some of the fears and fumbles. Maybe some of the sense of relief as well from realizing that there are alternatives to going out and (somehow) conjuring up a romantic relationship with someone to be met later in order to be able to have sex.

I'd like to thank Vyt again for the original post.

The New York Times just put up a review, and got Annie Sprinkle (porn star/sex worker/writer/etc) to write it.

Quote:
This will be a welcome book to prostitutes everywhere, especially those who have been raped, robbed or busted in places where laws and stigmas against the business make such experiences all the more traumatizing. It is also a valuable resource for academics, a challenge to law enforcement and politicians, and a boon to johns the world over.
