for me, it was a choice between two.johnny carso was the king for a long time, anyone who was anyone was there
my other choice and probably my favorite was craig ferguson on the late late show. the most unscripted hilarious show, a gay robot as his sidekick, shows including craig and puppets and the hotest women as guests. everything was a surprise
neither of these two talked politics trying to push you left or right, they entertained you and that made them both great
Carson is the GOAT for many reasons including including the era and his longevity and still be relevant after decades hosting the Tonight Show. that said, two names could be added .. Steve Allen the first actual host, then later Jack Paar who took the show to great ratings and made it a great show. Allen was offered a variety show and let the Tonight Show which NBC initially dropped for a late night version of Today which flopped. so they quickly hired Paar to revive the Tonight Show format. after about 5-6 years Paar got tired of the grind of tapes 5 shows a week and opted to quit, and if course NBC offered him his own variety show with complete control of content. so that opened the door for ...

I loved Craig Ferguson. He was just raunchy enough without going over the line and the women played up to him. They usually came dressed to impress.
Never got Conan. Just never thought he was funny at all.
