If A Republican Had Promised This . . . What Would You Say?
How would you have reacted in 2008 if any Republican ran promising to do the following?
1) Codify indefinite detention into law; (2) draw up a secret kill list of people, including American citizens, to assassinate without due process; (3) proceed with warrantless spying on American citizens; (4) prosecute Bush-era whistleblowers for violating state secrets; (5) reinterpret the War Powers Resolution such that entering a war of choice without a Congressional declaration is permissible; (6) enter and prosecute such a war; (7) institutionalize naked scanners and intrusive full body pat-downs in major American airports; (8) oversee a planned expansion of TSA so that its agents are already beginning to patrol American highways, train stations, and bus depots; (9) wage an undeclared drone war on numerous Muslim countries that delegates to the CIA the final call about some strikes that put civilians in jeopardy; (10) invoke the state-secrets privilege to dismiss lawsuits brought by civil-liberties organizations on dubious technicalities rather than litigating them on the merits; (11) preside over federal raids on medical marijuana dispensaries; (12) attempt to negotiate an extension of American troops in Iraq beyond 2011 (an effort that thankfully failed); (14) reauthorize the Patriot Act; (13) and select an economic team mostly made up of former and future financial executives from Wall Street firms that played major roles in the financial crisis.
--------
Well, that's a quote from The Atlantic, as discussed here.

It's an interesting question. If a Republican had made the above promises, how would you have reacted? Or a Democrat, for that matter?

Well, what would you think? Would you have voted for someone who promised this?

like everything else, some I agree with, some not. Just like I did when Sullivan ripped Bush a new asshole before the 04 elections ... aparently it didnt hamper the outcome of the 04 election, I doubt it will the 012 election either.
but by all means, beat the moot drum long and loud ... it helps take the focus off of the peabrain gop presidential candidates .... not
lol

So which of the "promises"' do you approve?
I find it bizarre so many of you are ok with this. We will argue at length about whether Catholics should be forced to fund birth control, but giving the President the authority to arrest and indefinitely detain citizens on American soil - without due process - seems to be fine.
We have sunk to a new low. The media have mind numbed us to the point that we no longer even recognize freedom. You realize, I hope, that so long as that provision in the NDAA exists, there really aren't any freedoms we can count on.
This is truly sad. The terrorists have won, after all.

Did you really just cut and paste off a blog called 'suicide girl' and pass it off as some enlightened commentary? Tsk tsk

"Sa artman", truth is truth, no matter where it is posted.
AND... the original source was "The Atlantic". Hardly a blog.

Well, CJ, since you asked.
1, 2, & 3 are the worst, but the others don't really promote freedom. So what about indefinite detention of citizens appeals to you most?

Yes, those are laws on the books now. Damn, pay attention!
The law gives the government the authority to indefinitely detain citizens on American soil without due process. You have no right to a lawyer, or trial. You can be scooped up, detained, and no one will know where you are or what happened to you. The government can do this without probable cause, they only need the suspicion that you might somehow be connected to "terrorism."
You're ok with that? Ok.
