what do you guys recommend? i want to be able to change the background like ive seen some people do.

Like the two above previously stated, gimp is your best bet. the one photo software that gets closest to photoshop that is also free.

If you've never used image manipulation software, it can be a little overwhelming to learn but it is incredibly full-featured... And free (@mrour)!
