Default Tablets, winbooks, tiny laptops....

I think my little netbook is going to bite the dust in the near future. I originally bought it for travel and it's been a pretty good companion for the last 5 years.

Do the new tablets have a significant performance increase from netbooks? Any tablets to stay away from? Any recommended? Any big limitations I need to be aware of?

Thanks,

mm

If you spend 99% of your time checking email and browsing the web, consider a Chromebook. I advise most to stay away from Windows unless they have Windows based programs they need to install and run. There are free web versions of many programs that once needed to be installed in Windows including MS Office, so having the Windows operating system is not critical for the average person anymore.

I've heard of chromebooks, that's the extent of my knowledge about them. I'll need to add them to the list of things to look at.

The Surface Pro, is it overkill for just surfing the Web and email? I'm not doing work with it, just a toy to replace the net book.

Netbooks were slow pigs for most things, but they did the basics pretty well. When I tried to do real work on mine it was mostly aggravation just waiting for it to think about shit.

Surface pro is good but the price tag is a little high.

I got a Winbook 10 for Christmas and like for all that windows stuff that's not essential anymore (WTF?).

Chromebook is good if you're into renting your OS and everything you do from Google.

I'd still buy another iPad but I don't use it as a computer for the most part, I fart around on it because that's what it is, a personal farting around box and it does it very well. As far as two-stepping any real but not essential software for business use, forget it, but it is a lot of fun.

The WinBook does what I wanted a Netbook to do with a lot less weight, better speed and running all those non-essential windows apps. Plus you get better screen rez than the Netbook so the bottom half of most of your programs is back. For under $200 it's the non essential windows tablet to beat right now, imho.

if you want net book replacement stay away from chrome books. Go ith a windows product. the newest netbooks are quad core .

I have one of these and it covers all of the bases EXCEPT 3d computer gaming. I don't play computer games anyway.

look up the reviews on line.

Thanks everyone!

All the suggestions are in my target price range - < $250. I do have a new laptop, but that fucker is heavy to carry around just for a toy.

I got an IPad Air last year from ATT. And it's a pretty good machine. I was even able to download Office, for occasional business use.

iPads are great for reading in bed or taking on a one day business trip to scan e-mails. But they're worthless as a serious computer. I love mine for browsing the internet. It's fine if you only have to type a paragraph or two. But otherwise, it's a lot like your dick -- OK for fucking around with, but not much use for business.

It'll be more of a toy than anything else.

Are the keyboard/carry cases worth the additional expense? I see a lot of the keyboards are Bluetooth capable.

ETA - It'll be a replacement for a 5 y/o netbook

Ipad for tablet
Macbook for laptop
end of discussion

Seriously, I bought my kids laptops with windows 8... It sucks I hate it, I'm a Mac guy, period. I never deal with problems or issues that windows users deal with everyday. My 2 cents
