We here at The Z Review spend a good deal of time trying to get inside the mind of the average Trump supporter. It is furtive terrain, like the Okefenokee swamp – shallow where it should be deep…and deeper in places you’d expect it to be shallow. New polling shows the President’s approval ratings at a historic low, save that unshakable 36 per cent that are still committed to the man. The question is why? What is it about that rotting squash that inspires such devotion? Well, I have a few thoughts on the subject.
Trump diehards are white – very white. They’re also under-educated, religious and working class. A lot of them are struggling to survive and have been struggling for a long while now. They didn’t fare very well under the Obama years. The economic collapse of 2008 was the result of the poisonous combo of Bush and Cheney’s war and the housing market crash. They blamed Obama, of course, but they were the ones who voted for Bush twice. So, right off the bat – the Trump supporter is not great on taking accountability…this is a trait they share with their dear leader. The fact is, there are a quite a few commonalities between the talking yam and his congenitally confused constituency. They are both susceptible to a juicy conspiracy theory, they are prone to blind, inarticulate rages and they are actively xenophobic and inherently (if not actively) racist. All of these similarities give Trump’s fans the warm and fuzzies. “He gets me!” they feel. “He’s one of us.” The only thing is – he isn’t.
Donald J. Trump is a billionaire. It is an inherited wealth. He went to the best schools – not that it shows – and has lived a life of insane privilege since he was making pee pee in his short pants. Putin is also so far up his ass, he’s tasting borsht. He owes Russian a lot of money over his failed businesses and the cagey Russian prez is eager for payback. So, no…on a deeper level, Trump has zilch in common with his fans. But as we know from experience, many times it’s the shallower bonds that matter most. It’s like having great sex with someone you really have no connection with at all. And Trump and his followers are in the middle of a veritable fuck frenzy. They’re doing everything…no position is off the table!
What his fans don’t understand, is…they’re only getting screwed. When the rutting is done, and their face-finished faces look like glazed doughnuts, they’re going to be left with nothing…not even a ten-spot on the bedside table. Still, they can’t help themselves…they need more. They’re in love and it’s an amour fou! A crazy love…or in this case – a love WITH a crazy.
But getting back to the main point…all that I’ve said doesn’t quite get there as far as an explanation for their ardor. Well, finally it’s about being heard. For years, these people have felt disenfranchised…talked down to. The country they once adored and felt an entitled ownership of was no longer theirs. They were not respected. Their fears were ridiculed. “No one understands that terrorists have converged on the border and are just waiting to steal our guns and rape our dogs!” They feel Trump hears them. They are not deplorable to him. After all, he spent every day of his campaign out on the road pandering to them like a champ. He still loves to get out there…to the armpits and orifices of this nation…just to get some face time with his devotees. Obama was professorial. They didn’t like his elitist attitude and the fact that he was a Kenyan and an Islamic fundamentalist. Hillary was killary. How can you love a murderer?
So, why do they love Trump? It’s not a mystery. That particular 36 per cent of America would love anybody that isn’t on the other side. Do they find him more ‘fuckable’ than the average politician? Of course…he’s a TV star! All celebrities are more fuckable than the average citizen.
Bottom line, Trump’s fans are with him to the end – their fates are tied together. He was right about shooting someone on Fifth Avenue and still remaining popular. The American heartland is Donald’s Fifth Avenue…and he’s just gonna keep shooting his love gun in his fan’s faces until it runs out of bullets, baby – they wouldn’t want it any other way.
