Easily offended. Geeezzzzz
I appreciate all military…active duty and especialy vets! And I especially appreciate the viet name vets! My uncle fought in viet nam and ended up losing his whole life/family and eventually died on a park bench drunk in freezing weather!
I was in my flea market today and witnessed a “ situation” that kinda upset me….. an elderly gentleman wearing a viet nam vet hat was encountered by a twentysomething guy who told the elderly man “ thank you for serving”… well the elderly gentleman got a frustrated look on his face and in a harsh tone, said “ I hate when people say that to me”…. He said it made him feel like it was just “a pat response or just words without true meaning, just cause it is ingrained as a normal response when you see a vet wearing that type of hat.
Now I don’t know what was going on in the elderly gents head.. but the poor young guy looked embarrassed n upset and walked away quickly.
Some folks get too easily offended..and for silly reasonings… or at least in MY opinion…lol…but if they have a legit reason, all good!!! good for them!
And to all you vets….much appreciate ya!!!

Sometimes we (vets) fuck shit up. Something simple as that and the vets head in a fucked up place. Wont make sense to anyone, only makes sense in his head Mine isn't so much the thank you, mine more the acceptance of help. I make my everyday life harder than it should because Ill do it myself before asking for help. For the record most of dont mean to be fuckheads, and are generally sorry after the fact.

2 things are possible here imo.
He may not have been a vet and just wearing a hat or had some mental health issues we dont know.
Or
Some real veterans dont feel the need to be thanked because of pride and the fact they felt it was a duty and with Vietnam he may not have had a choice and was drafted.
Alot of vets including myself appreciate being thanked but
The most important thing we did if we werent drafted is we raised our hand and asked to serve.

I try and thank a vet because with out their service we couldn't have the freedom yet we enjoy plus I don't know what horrible things they saw so i don't get offended with a nasty reply this is one time I let negative replies slide off
Just think how much different kinda life we would possibly be living with out them and their service so a great big thanks to them

Could also be because it's around Memorial Day, a time where Vets remember old teammates and friends they served with who don't make it home. A lot of vets struggle with serious survivors guilt issues, especially during certain times of the year.

Usually I thank a vet for their service, yet at the same time I feel guilty & I wish I had a ton of money & could at minimum buy their meal or more.
Appreciate vets more than I could possibly ever let them know
