Default Meandering reply to Jacky in new thread, to avoid going off topic, about tariffs

Or perhaps these judges are applying the law as it’s written. And following the rule of law is one of the reasons the USA is a very prosperous place compared to most of the rest of the world.

Free markets are another. Trump’s tariffs on toys, cheap consumer electronics, clothes and the like are an attack on free markets. They’re an attack on America. They won’t affect the wealthy that much but they’ll make the poor poorer than they would be otherwise. GDP growth will be lower than it would be otherwise. Many tariffed products will never be made in America. To the extent that they are, the American companies that manufacture the products will be less competitive in world markets and their prices will be higher than they would be otherwise. That’s called crony capitalism.

My belief is that overall the tariffs will result in higher prices, fewer jobs, and lower wages in America.

I could ask why President Trump hates America. But he doesn’t. He’s just ignorant.

Those judges made the right decision. I bet it will ultimately be held up by the SCOTUS, despite the appeals court stay. And the sooner the better. Trump’s erratic trade policies hurt America.

That said, it does make sense to produce more of the goods that are important to our national security in the USA, particularly ones that we don’t import from reliable allies. And it does make sense to take steps that would make our manufacturers more competitive and reduce our trade deficit.

On the first point Trump has been an abject failure. For example, he, like Biden, sat on his ass through his first term and did nothing to develop sources of rare earth elements and magnets. Now our manufacturers are totally dependent on China, and China has cut off supplies. How are we going to make cars, planes, advanced weaponry, etc if China doesn’t back off?

On the second point, Trump’s record is a mixed bag. His corporate tax cuts and deregulation made American exporters more competitive. But the profligate spending he allowed made the trade deficit higher than it would be otherwise.

This is a really nice post. Most objective one I have seen here so far.

The only thing I would add is that there are things other than rare earth metals that we waited too long on, fucked ourselves over.

I saw an interesting report that said even if manufacturing comes back, it will only add 2-3 percent of jobs. The reason? Efficiency gains. Robotics, AI, etc. are going to do all tasks that used to be done manually. There is no future for a large labor force in manufacturing in this country, no matter what we do.

And some of these policies, like killing anything Green Energy related, are unbelievably foolish. There is a TON of money to be made in this field. A ton. We are going to let other countries make it all. (and I am ignoring future Environmental impacts of this, which is another topic entirely)

1. Are the robots going to replace the batteries in other robots?

2. Definitely an entire different topic.

1. Yes, absolutely. It’s a myth to think you’ll need people to do such simple tasks. Most people don’t have a clue what changes are coming in the next 36-60 months.

Ouch guys, that kinda stings. But it's funny as fuck so I'll laugh through it.

At the rate of decay of estimates to AGI, I think 36-60 months is very reasonable, and combined with advances in robotics we haven't seen anything.
