Default Trade deal with Japan

https://www.reuters.com/business/tru...ge-2025-07-23/

How long will it be before the usual suspects find something negative with this. We know tariffs don't work, right?

Tariffs don’t work. We will pay 15% more for Toyotas made in Japan, which make up only a portion of those sold in the US. Japanese will still not buy American cars. We will see if American rice will outsell Chinese rice in Japan. This deal doesn’t improve the life of Americans nor does it help American businesses.

You realize that Toyotas and Hondas are already made in the US so aren’t subject to the tariffs anyway.

Bud, Japan doesn't agree to bad deals. It won't be as great of a deal as Trump will insist, but it was a nice compromise for both countries IMO. Japan should be really happy.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx2v9q8e0vjo

Some experts had warned that Trump's tariffs could knock as much as a percentage point off Japan's economy, pushing it into recession.

With lower tariffs, exporters will be able to do business in the US more cheaply than if Trump had stuck to an earlier threat to levy higher taxes.

And the deal brings certainty, which allows businesses to plan.

The announcement also strengthened the Japanese yen against the US dollar, giving manufacturers more purchasing power to buy the raw materials they need to expand their businesses.

The US agreement is particularly good for Japan's auto giants like Toyota, Honda and Nissan. Previously, American importers had to pay a 27.5% levy when they shipped in Japanese cars.

That is now being reduced to 15%, potentially making Japanese cars cheaper compared to the likes of rival China.

Having said that, US automakers have signalled they are unhappy with the deal.

They are concerned they have to pay a 25% tariff on imports from their plants and suppliers in Canada and Mexico compared with Japan's 15% rate.

Budman has made a nice point. Trump got a tariff deal done.

Now then:

- what good will this do the average American ?
- how much will Japanese car prices increase because of this.......15% ?
- is there an inflationary impact ?

Hope to see a follow up from Budman.

It's hilarious when cheeto says the world was laughing at the US and taking advantage of us. If they weren't then, they sure as fuck are now.

'Complete joke': Trump admin ripped over new trade deal that's 'worse than we had before'

President Donald Trump touted a new trade deal with Japan on Tuesday evening, announcing the agreement on his social media platform and during White House events.

"We just completed a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest Deal ever made," Trump boasted on Truth Social. "Japan will invest, at my direction, $550 Billion Dollars into the United States, which will receive 90% of the Profits."
Trump claimed the deal would create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and that there "has never been anything like it."

"Perhaps most importantly, Japan will open their Country to Trade including Cars and Trucks, Rice and certain other Agricultural Products, and other things," he added.
The president noted that Japan will pay reciprocal tariffs of 15% to the United States.

"This is a very exciting time for the United States of America, and especially for the fact that we will continue to always have a great relationship with the Country of Japan," he concluded.

Japanese officials have not publicly commented on the terms laid out by Trump. Details about its implementation and specifics weren't immediately known.
Critics roundly mocked the new deal.
Joey Politano, author of the economics newsletter Apricitas Economics, wrote on X, "Trump announces 15% tariffs on Japan. Another trade 'deal' that’s even worse than what we had before he took office."

The popular Wu Tang is for the Children account chimed in on X, "In another effort to distract from Epstein….Trump just posted that he made a deal with Japan and they 'will invest, at his direction, $550B into the United States, which will receive 90% of the Profits'…..yeah ok grandpa."

Spencer Hakimian, Founder of Tolou Capital Management, wrote on X, *TRUMP TO IMPOSE 15% TARIFF ON GOODS FROM JAPAN Japan doesn’t even charge a 1% tariff on us. This is a complete joke.

Software developer Lucas Baker added, "One bad policy after another from this administration. Future historians will note this as the era in which the age of American hegemony made a rapid and irreversible decline."

Clara Jeffery‬, editor-incChief of Mother Jones/Center for Investigative Reporting, wrote on Bluesky, "Prediction: Japanese consumers don't want our cars, trucks, or rice."

Jeffery added in a follow-up post a gif of a confused John Travolta, which comes from a scene in the 1994 film "Pulp Fiction" directed by Quentin Tarantino. She captioned the post,: "'where are the Japanese buyers for our s---ty gas cars?'"

She noted that China has electric vehicles that "eliminate range anxiety, cost like $11,000, are cool AF, and literally dance."

"Japanese consumers are not going to pop for a Buick. This is why the Big Three (and labor, too) fighting for status quo rather than future is so short-sighted."

Jesus, your posts are a fucking riot! Tell me, is it possible for daddy trump to EVER be wrong?

That TCS is no good for you. It makes you seem deranged and part of a cult. Also, your post seems like an attempt to hijack the thread. Anything to offer on the trade agreement?

Default Members Are Reminded . . .

Of Guidelines 1, 3, and 4 . . .
Quote:
#1 - Avoid cases of unprovoked rudeness to others. No place for it here. Yes, with the dynamic nature of the threads and topics, tempers will flare and things will become heated from time to time. You may often encounter individuals who become passionate or emotional when expressing one's opinion or point of view. That's all understood and perfectly acceptable within reason…….but, start slamming or bashing another member and be met with consequences.
#3 - Disrespect to others, IN GENERAL, will be considered an item of low tolerance, especially when posting in our coed forums. Follow the Golden Rule and treat others as you wish to be treated yourself. This applies to fellow members as well as staff. We do not require that you have respect for us, but we do require that you treat us respectfully in the public forums. If you feel the need to vent, gripe, or blow off some steam regarding a staff member's action or decision, we ask that you keep it private. Email, RTM, or the PM system would be the appropriate avenue to take in such cases. In cases where you would like to request additional clarity about a staff decision, you are free to pursue an answer in either a public forum or private means of communication. If handled publicly, post your inquiry in a respectful manner.
#4 - Blatant insults or hostility toward another member will be met with staff intervention. This applies to using our coed forums for name calling, personal attacks, or vulgar slang terms to describe fellow members. If you have legitimate concerns about another member here, share them tactfully in the appropriate private forums or with staff.

I wonder how many of the TCS club have ever been to these countries? A Ford/Chevy/Dodge truck just doesn't work. Their roads aren't built to handle American sized cars...Good luck parking a tonka, I mean cyber truck in Tokyo, Rome or London.

If you read and understood what the actual deal is, and you were capable of any honest objectivity, you’d know the deal is not good. In fact, we were better off with the pre-Trump status quo.

... I DID read and understand things about the deal, mate.

And instead of yer slights and insults - why not simply
state what YOU dislike about it.

No need to mumble or stumble - just EXPLAIN.
