Question Help!

Something is majorly wrong with my computer...the screen keeps going completely black every 10-20 mins or so but it comes back after like 5-10seconds. My cd drive does not work. My wifi button just stopped working so now i have to keep it plugged in to my internet cord.. and it also freezes a couple times a day now. I ran the avg virus scan and it says there are no viruses.

I barely know anything about computers but I need to get myself a new one. I need some advice on what would be best for me though.. It needs to be something I can leave on all day, use on my lap and be used very frequently throughout the day...

I thought about a tablet, but I do a LOT of typing so I need something with a keyboard.. I would prefer something with a 15" screen or similar. Also needs to be reasonably priced as funds are limited right now.

Any links with suggestions would be much appreciated! Sorry I am just computer clueless

If still need help, pm, & I'll refer you to a guy that fixes this stuff for a living.
And he's north of river.
Worst case: he'll tell you straight up if it's toasted.

Get yourself a MacBook / MacBook Air they are approx 13" and run about $1000 new but will last you a good 5-7 years. You can find some great deals on used MacBooks on CL for $400-800. I've converted many friends and family members over the years. If you do get one let me know and I can hook you up with some software: Microsoft word, Photoshop, etc

Unless you're doing high end graphics or trying to play the latest games you don't need a high power computer. If you were happy with your old pawn shop computer (when it wasn't acting up) then a computer like Leilani Bebe is linked to should make you very happy. That would serve you very well for your browsing and office application needs.

If you want to window shop locally, and/or buy off a shelf, perhaps walk through Microcenter @ 9294 Metcalf Ave. or window shop at:
http://www.microcenter.com/search/se...ortby=pricelow#
and pick the OP store.
Larger selection than Best Buy or others, and usually better pricing.
Leilani's post is nice inexpensive HP machine, note that its a refurb mail order. That said, one of my road warrier machines is an HP Pavilion and its still kicking and screaming after four years of seriously heavy use.
Must have Windows 7 or more recent, and at least 4GB of memory, or whatever Apples current is if you go that route.

If you're going to dispose of the old machine, there's more needed to sanitize the data drives than just deleting. Ask.

I wouldn't buy a refurbished one..and that too a 'Chrome book' no chance. Chrome book is bounded with many limitations (esp for me).

Mostly looks like your graphics card went bad or could be memory or some serious issues, since you said its old I wouldn't waste my time on finding parts, issues & fixing it. Going for a new one saves lot of your headache. Yea microcenter has good computers and its local so you can stop by there. Mac is great alternate but it doesn't come cheap. Esp on electornics do not go with either used one or a refurbished one

Take a look at the Microcenter on-line and let us know which ones you're looking at. I'm sure there's a bunch of of folks that will fall over each other to help you select one. Especially if you happen to post a pic of you in a red cap some time this week.
Start with Windows 7 (or higher), 4 GB of memory (or more), builtin wireless card, a couple flash drive ports, a dvd disc player, stuff like that. Most have these, so avoiding the ones that don't have what you need will narrow down the list quickly. Some folks prefer to have also RJ45 port aka 10/100 network connector (wire connection to local server). If you can find one that happens to have the Microsoft Office word and excel, that's worth an extra bit, as those programs are expenseive as standalones.
As I mentioned above, just a bit of care and you can easily get a few years out of a good buy, even if some TSA guy drops it twice in less than a minute.
