You're missing the point. Farms have been subsidized for decades to keep food sources secure, and to not let farmers be subject to the whims of weather only. Tariffs are further down the line for economic stability. That stability can be upset by radical swings in an already precarious industry.
When you add tariffs that are thrown around whimsically, or as a method to penalize importers, you do so at the peril of the people who are producing the product. In this case we're not talking about it percentage or two but 25 to 50% which is ridiculous. China figured out how to wag the dog and just bought their soybeans from someplace else. This is why Trump is such a terrible leader he doesn't realize that we're not the only game in town, and that there are choices. Canada's doing the same thing, and tell him our Administration to pound salt.
This is exactly why Congress should be the only persons able to administer tariffs, and only after careful consideration. Not shooting from the hip and levying such tariffs via the stupid social media post. We suffer a complete fool in the office of POTUS
