Question What are your thoughts on this? Insurance that tracks your driving.

My insurance is outrageous right now (around $750 a month).

I recently found a company that will insure me for $342 a month but they want me to put an app on my phone & monitor my driving 24/7.

It is my understanding that the better or worse I drive, my rate may increase or decrease.

I went ahead & signed up (my policy starts March 2nd) but I think I am having buyer's remorse. It sounded great at the time, but it might not be a good match for me.

Franky, I speed a lot on the freeway & I often accelerate pretty hard.

Does anyone have any experience with insurance like this? Are they pretty strict? Should I just go ahead & cancel before the policy even starts?

As always, thank for the helpful advice in advance

I had this one time & when you get to an area that has no Internet signal,(downloaded app that monitors driving on cell, phone)the insurance company will use it against you. They will still charge a higher rate. I was getting messages through email the program wasn't downloaded because the app was glitching. The review complaints were bad on Google Play store.

Consider the concept of hiding in the masses, like a needle in a haystack, thus don't.

Tesla does it through their own captive affiliate insurance company. A friend has it but drives very little and absolutely according to speed limit. The premium actually went down but one time she either sped she got a warning or a dollar or two increase if I recall correctly.

But UC is correct they will know exactly where you are, how fast or slow you go, and when if you are running a light.

F that shit. One more device tracking you while participating in this hobby is just a bad idea. Also, once they have that data, who's to say what the insurance companies would do with it.

I downloaded the app my company uses as they were going to raise my rate if I didn't. When I check the app it shows a discount but I never see a reduction on my bill. It will ding you for moving your phone while driving. They do monitor acceleration and braking. Also I'm pretty sure the new vehicles track you anyway.

I did it once for a lower rate with Progressive. Nothing was different in my life other than yet another app taking up space in my phone, and I got the discount. But I also drive like a grandma.

I dumped Progressive because they F%&*#%$ me over on an very minor accident. Was in the parking lot of Home Depot on West road driving north on the outer access road closet to the freeway to turn on the road towards the freeway. Speed was about 10-12 mph according to my GPS'ed dashcam. Some kid just blew into the intersection, was able to slow down so all we did was rub but he broke my license plate holder, did some minor grill scratching etc.. basically enough damage to put the truck in the shop but it is still driveable.

Here is where they screwed me over. The kid had a Progressive insurance policy number. He is from Ecuador. Progressive was sent the video, they stated it was HIS fault but denied the claim to get my truck repaired because he did not have the correct coverage. And they won't tell me any more. State Law requires LIABILITY for him to drive the vehicle. They said the vehicle he had was his fathers but liability follows the vehicle. I drive you vehicle & be at fault for an accident, your insurance is on the hook.

My guess is that they are not legal in this country as insurance companies do not check your citizenship. If he was on a visa of any kind they probably based his policy off that.

I'm going to drag racing tomorrow at Houston Motorsports Park, and I sure don't want them tracking my driving.

One of my friends did that "Snapshot" device that plugged into your car thing and screwed them over. He popped it into his car then only drove it to and from the store (max mileage 40 miles a month and speed no faster than 45). How he got to work is a co-worker gave him a lift.

After the allotted time frame they gave him a sweet deal, he turned in the device then drove normal

You'll be saving over $400.00 per month.
Buy a new phone with a new carrier (cheapest compatible device & plan you can find) & set everything up on that phone.
Leave it at home 95% of the time.
Your premium may even go lower because it will show that you rarely drive the car.
The $ you'll save will be much greater than what you spend on the phone.
If they start asking questions say you're a hermit & work from home.

Progressive did me dirty, too. It was over an accident, not over the discount for the driving app. But it wasn't as bad as what they did to you. But I can 100% confirm that Progressive sucks.

Thank you for all the replies so far. I've been working my real-world job all weekend so I have not had a chance to read them, but I will read them tomorrow.
