I’m considering staying a night before my flight this weekend, but I would be staying near the airport. Do locals tend to avoid this area? Is it safe?

Which airport?
Bush is Northeast(suburbs)
Hobby is South(more inner city)
Both are generally safe areas, just depends what property you stay at.
Locals avoid the Galleria area.

Depending on which airport you want to stay at.
IAH (Bush) has a nice selection of hotels nearby. Depending on price you want to spend.

Same for Hobby

I can vouch for the Ramada Inn on Will Clayton Rd just east of IAH. I got a nice super suite there for a photoshoot for 105 a night (price might be different now) but room was very spacious.
