Not to pick nits, sir, but the WHEN is in there. LOL (A younger eye doctor once told me upon examining my eyes at age 40.... "an interesting thing happens when you get old, sir...." and then started to explain about why I needed reading glasses.)

The WHY is left out intentionally in my methodology of questioning, as many on the receiving end of "WHY?" feel that judgment is forthcoming, if not already in play.

An example: "Why did you do this?" will likely get you an argument and/or a shut down. "I didn't to THAT". etc.

A way of asking the question that invites a more open reception and response is: "Can you help me to understand WHAT was your thought process WHEN you made this decision?" (being careful through one's paraverbals not to imply "this decision" is somehow being judged as wrong or inadequate).

Probably more than you wanted to know, but if you are interested in a further discussion, I have taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels a class in communication skills...

Doh! I was practically slapping myself in the face when I re-read this and tried to correct it. I saw the "when" too late, ironically. Then when I hit "save" my signal dropped, got logged out and I couldn't do a thing. I was secretly hoping you wouldn't read this before I could fix it. But I knew I'd be too late, so I thought, "screw it, I'll probably get a snappy, whole-hearted retort from Sarge and that's already a win for me". And damn, I was right.

You made excellent points there Sarge. My first comment was selfishly written to satisfy my inability to handle open loops that I establish in my own logic (like the 5 W's), and since you mentioned more than half of them, in my mind you passed the point of no return and I needed closure. Ergo, WHY and WHEN. But I missed the WHEN! I shall be more observant next time good sir.



But I'll probably still make an off-hand comment that secretly fulfills my anticipation of pattern completion. It is quite an idiosyncrasy of mine ;-P
