If you are going to get a degree on info systems, i recommend go with a p.c.
I recommend you go to dell's dfo website (factory outlet), where they sell their scratch and dent stuff. Look for systems that have windows 7, since windows 8 sucks..
I've been in the info systems industry for a long long time..
Apple has nice systems, way more expensive, you will have to buy most everything..
it will be easier to find software that runs on windows. (free or almost free, or that you "borrow" from friends..
I think I have a link somewhere where dell still has windows 7 systems listed.., if you want it, pm me and I'll look for it..

Apple. No comparison in quality, life span, or lack of headaches because your machine always works.

Apple!
I have 5 Apple products and enjoy every last one of these reliable devices. My experience with Apple has been outstanding. I am thinking about upgrading my IMAC.
P.S. Apples are forever!

My 2 cents since I have both.
Mac's cost more but have a better build quality. A more stable OS, & when they put out an update they've been free for quite awhile now. I've had mine since 2010 & it's never once frozen. The learning curve when switching from PC is short/small. The only thing I've had to buy is a new battery. A detractor is that I DO have an older 2010 MacBookPRO & it's heavy by today's standard. Also 250GB is kinda small.
I'm rocking a Series 7 Samsung. I purchased it right before Win8 came out, so it had Win7. I did upgrade to Win8 though I made/have a back-up for Win7. Once you get past the UI changes or only use Desktop mode it's okay. You can buy 3 or 4 mid to high-end PC's for a Mac. They are still buggy/laggy when compared to Macs OS. When you consider you can get a decently spec'd PC for less than half a Mac it won't hurt your feeling it you ever break it.
From a life of product perspective I think the extra money you spend to have a Mac that'll last 6 years is a better value over a PC that will need a serious cleaning in 2 just to run at 2/3 it's original speed. But s $300 PC that you can get 2-4 years of service out of is appealing too in its own right.
*Disclaimer: I like OSx but I loathe iOS (i.e. iPhone UI)

Apple is the only way to go, Macs are just easier to use, upgrade, and you don't have to constantly learn a new interface. I have 10 year old Macs that look enough like today's newest OS that no one has to learn anything, and they run perfectly.
PCs are just a security nightmare, I know too many people who just get they PCs all screwed up and unusable, just doesn't happen with a Mac.
Lots of techy guys here will tell you they run their PCs for 10 years and they run great, but I doubt you can provide an average user who can say that.
There are some reliable stores in town that sell used MacBooks that will run way better than a new Mac. Software really isn't more expensive, in fact it is often much cheaper.
And it is true, once you go Mac, you never go back.

I have used PC's since the mid-80's. I was a faithful PC user till 2010. With my research that I do there were times I lost many files because of virus issues, bad sectors, PC's in general became more unreliable for my needs. I owned Apple stock, had a ipod, itouch and finally made the jump to a MacBook Pro. Since then I have had very few issues and no virus problems. yes, they cost more, but after having gone through 3 computers in a 30 month period... enough was enough. I miss some of the things I got from PC's, but I do not miss the headaches caused by PC's acting up, which at times can be very unforgiving.
Besides, PC's comes with tons of unnecessary software that runs and runs and the computer sits there making funny (or unfunny) noises. Apple usually gets right to the point.
For those with 10 yo PC's... I have some great old software.

Considering most are all Apple lovers...I'm thinking I will go with Apple. At least try it out. If I don't like it...I can return it or sell it right? I want to see what all the hype is about and to be honest...I've been having PC/laptop trouble and would like a good laptop. Currently going through a laptop per year. Screens go out, things break, etc. The main thing that's bugging me is that you have to pay near 2k for one with a lot of memory and hard drive. How do the Apple systems run? Fast?

Check out Discount Electronics (PC Outlet) on Culebra, they are on Facebook, they provide 1 year warranty on their used Macs, you can also buy a used Mac from Apple.Com
There is also a place on the NE side, don't remember the name, don't have any experience with them.
You don't need a lot of memory, the standard Mac configurations are good enough for the average user. You don't need to spend $2000, you can spend $700 or less for a good used one or $1000-$1200 for a good new one.
And they do hold their value better than PCs.

Apples to Apples... You can't compare an Apple laptop to your $500 laptop at Walmart. They cost more because they ensure the components used are of a higher standard than the Walmart sale. The computer (hardware) is the same for both if you buy equal dollar amount laptops. The components are no kidding the same it is just the software operating system and the software for applications that are different. An apple that cost $2500 is the same as a professional series laptop of almost every brand. Most professions use PCs and Microsoft products though there are some especially in multimedia that use Apple OS for there seamless integration. As for as schoold goes, both will do what you need especially if you spend the same money. But honestly most schools have computer labs which will do everything you want without the expense of buying a computer at all. Windows 8 has a patch but you can buy Windows 7 with your laptop all you have to do is ask. I have all of the above and as much as I like my Iphone and Ipod I don't care for the Ipad or the Apple Mac. Also, buying technology no matter how cutting edge is buying last years dirty underwear. You will not only not be able to sell right away or it will be at a large loss... There are exceptions to every rule. Sorry for the long response but 1 line responses typically don't answer the question or just muddies the water.

You make valid points. Out of curiosity does the higher end PCs run on flash drives? My school is online so I will not have a computer lab to share and I am reliant on laptops. Although I'd prefer a laptop anyways because mine is horrible and a piece of crud. I bought a $900 desk top and it's bulky and runs horrible slow. Even after I defragmented the hard drive and cleaned out all excess files. I've run virus scanners and also have virus protection.
I was able to stop quickly at the apple store yesterday to ask some questions and I really liked the fact that there wasn't a big modem and a bunch of wires for their desktop. To me...it seemed like the quality was different. Right now I'm thinking of getting the Macbook Air, Time capsule, along with the Mac desktop.
Personally I do not like the iphone. I don't like how it functions. I am an Android fan (specifically the LG optimus phone). Although while looking at the Mac Air I was extremely impressed on the boot up time, how quickly it ran, and the design.
I'm not planning on getting all the bells and whistles and paying $2500 per item. The Mac Air that I am getting is $999, Time Capsule around $300 (2TB), and Mac desk top $1299. I'd prefer to buy these items new especially for what I'm paying for it. I also did some more research and the Apple Mac was higher rated than a Windows laptop (same prices). Also Consumer Electronics rated the Mac one of the highest.
Gosh...who knew I'd be converted to Apple? Well a little. Still not letting go of my Android phone love.
