I have a theory on the peanut butter metaphor. Some brands are cheap, but they're laced with Crisco, the better to clog your arteries with, my dear. Others are more expensive but also don't leave you clutching your chest and crapping your pants on the way to the ER.
But no brand of peanut butter has a choice as to whether or not you buy it. Reading between the lines, was there some bargaining involved, and then a better offer came through? Or maybe there was a failure to establish goodwill early on? Maybe a spidey sense that something didn't smell right?
I'm sure there are two stories, and the truest one doesn't necessarily come from the most vocal, or the bluest of balls. Could be a TCB problem, but it could also be lack of rapport or miscommunication.
