I belonged to the Communications Workers of America, CWA, for 34 years and got lucky that my pension fund is over funded to the point that the company asks us every few years if we will let them dip into the fund to cover rising health care costs and we always let them. One of only a few pension funds ( I'm told ) that is over funded and of course this is a private pension fund not public.


And yeah, there is good and bad in every union. The good part of paying dues is so that the union can hire as competent lawyers to negotiate contracts as the billion dollar company can.


The bad part of unions is protecting worthless pieces of shit who shouldn't have the job but can't be fired just because he or she is a worthless piece of shit which was my biggest complaint as a team leader. I was told more than a few times that as a team leader but not management, that I could not tell the boss who was a paper pusher, who was a good worker and who wasn't.


The problem with public sector unions, is the unsavory connection between the union and politicians who give the unions what they want to get the votes they need and of course over a period of decades, you end up with to many people taking money from the the company that is run on taxpayer dollars unlike a private sector union.


And tying your pension to a 401k and can a blessing or a curse, I've seen both. Fortunately for me, we voted no on a strictly 401k instead of guaranteed pension, when I watched a $600,000 401k, drop to $13,000 so my pension never varied and saved my financial ass and the 401k has made a relative nice comeback but I'll never see that $600,000 and the pension stays the same month after month.


I got very lucky all things considered with my union "experience" and unlike many, I don't give Democrats credit for any of my good fortune because they had nothing to do with the company doing well as far as I could tell.

I've never been a member of a union. But I'll just say as a CPA that when you have to deal with accounting for a pension fund it is a pain in the ass. Because of financial accounting and learning pension accounting, I knew I would never want to be an accountant for a living. It is by far the most complex accounting I ever had to learn. It's brutal. There are so many fucking legal guidelines that it makes your head spin.

But I have family members who have pension/union jobs and they seem to be doing well. I just feel sorry for the accountants who have to deal with that shit. I guess some CPAs just like to torture themselves and I'm just lazy.

yea, the big three and their $68 an hour in pay and benefits are such a downer.... sucks to actually be paid what you are worth. Should try it some time, to not be a slave

Yes....the TAXPAYERS just bailed them out AGAIN! And the depletion of the UNION FUNDS was PRIOR TO COVID....just like the deficiency created by California and New York that were just eliminated by the TAXPAYERS who are barricaded out of the Capitol Complex while the DumoCrats piss off money the Government doesn't have yet.

It took years and years and years for the unions to accept that containerized shipping would be the way of the future. They impeded containerized cargo. Even after it was gradually accepted, the workers that would be replaced still kept their jobs until retirement, during the adjustment period.


Any enterprising efficient company would have adjusted within a couple of years, laid off workers, and work to be competitive and profitable.


The ports are an unusual place because they are basically monopolies in each area. So no effective local competition. Now there are workers at ports easily clearing $ 100,000 per year with no more than a high school education and easy jobs.
