If the opposition were simply installed by the US, they would have no claim on legitimacy. With the removal of Maduro, his vice president becomes head of state pending elections. If the opposition comes topper through fair elections they will have a solid claim on legitimacy.
Regardless of the political personalities in Venezuela and here in the US, I think that that succession strategy makes sense in the long run.

So, let the people of Venezula choose who they want and if it comes to it, they will force regime change. That is the will of the people in action.
