I'm as pasty white as you can get and I thought Harlem was pretty cool. On 125th street you have the Apollo theatre, they have the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Melba's on 114th has pretty good soul food; you can try their Chicken and Waffles.

The Chelsea Market on 9th Ave is fun to walk around in if you are a "foodie". The Lower East Side has a bunch of ethnic restaurants. Don't forget Little Italy and Chinatown. NYC Public library on 5th Ave is not to be missed since I know you love to read. It's the second largest library in US.

The best way to see the Statue of Liberty (unless you actually want to land on the island) is the Staten Island Ferry.

i read that [chop the top and it'll fit] somewhere one time.
so, i just roughly measured it via google maps.
dfw airport is about 8 miles n to s.
manhattan is about 13 miles n to s.
so, chop off the bottom 1/3 of manhattan and it'll fit.

in any case,
1. i agree, it's drastic to chop of any part. an incredible place.
2. still, you could probably fit all of manhattan and its four sibling boroughs in the dfw metroplex area.
