mrod's post brings to mind a very important question.

Should chili have beans in it?

My vote is an adamant Hell No!!!

Isn't "real" chili also supposed to include a fire ant?

i have to disagree with ya on this one TTH... i make my chili with beans, pinto being my bean of choice of course. and i cook my pintos in a cast iron pot, no store bought beans in a can.

as a little bitty baby de marco, we was poor folks. so mama de marco couldn't afford to make chili with just meat... and pinto beans are both cheap and extremely nutritious. so those chili cookoff snobs can turn their collective noses up at the pinto, but us peasants just smile as we feast on a good bowl of home cooked chili with beans. boy howdy us poor folks loves us some beans. mmm mmm good.

hell, i won a corporate chili cookoff a few years ago. my entry was called Workingman's Chili, and i proudly featured pinto beans. my prize was a bottle of Crown which was quickly consumed by all the other chili contestants. don't think i got more than one shot out of that bottle.
