sorry for the not-so-blatant advertising of the movie "Norm of the North" which was shown in your nearest local theater last year.

Is this from all the bullying cases? Kids nowadays....
Again, I'm either on the fence or don't care. I'm not sure which.

Her intent and his mental state are factors in her guilt. He might have killed himself anyway, but she played an active role. It appears she tried to help him initially, even suggesting they go into inpatient therapy together and it didn't help. It's said she sought attention as the grieving girlfriend afterwards, so I don't think her motives were all that well meaning. She could have talked to his family or, at the very least, not encourage him to kill himself. He was also on Celexa and one of the side effects is suicide ideation. Changing his meds might have made a huge difference. I'm for these types of cases to be tried.
All of that being said, I'm all for end-of-life choice. Death is a scary topic. Suicide, even more so, I think, because of religion. All of that makes the latter a dolorous and often avoided conversation. But we really need to address it. We're coming around to legalizing assisted suicide in cases of terminal illness. I submit that it's largely because we can SEE the deterioration taking place and it is painful for US to watch. You can't quantify emotional pain for another person, or as easily, but we know it's painful enough for some to end it. I think if we stop demonizing it and allow them to decide how much is too much, we can get a better handle on the problem and create better therapies and solutions.

Hey Viv,
I'm really not certain what duty she had to notify anyone. Sure, probably should have but, I don't think there is a duty.
Kind of a bitch move? Absolutely. I'm not sure of her culpability.
Had she hounded him daily then sure.
He, actually persistently told her over and over he was going to kill himself, no?
This was more, at least to me, her not really believing, or no longer giving a shit, that he would do it after the who knows how many times he'd threatened it.
When he actually did, oops!
I'd really like to understand the UCLA's argument against her conviction. They've usually got pretty solid logic behind their opinions.

Good analysis.
A couple of additional factors ... one is that so many folks "cry suicide" as a way of getting attention and/or "negotiating" a resolution of a conflict with another party, the result is a "crying wolf" response with those around them not taking them seriously, and a spin off is so many end up killing or maiming themselves when they really didn't intend to commit suicide ... they were just "crying for help" or "leveraging" and it backfired on them.
Unless someone has actually been confronted with a suicidal persons in the midst of their "episode" and had to talk them down, then it's rather problematic to give an opinion as to the culpability of loved ones or friends by their response to the situation. Each situation has its own set of facts, which are usually quite different.
Too many folks engage in "Monday morning quarterbacking"!
