During an interview with the Atlantic David Letterman commented on censorship and the Jimmy Kimmel / Charlie Kirk situation.
David Letterman to Jeffrey Goldberg on Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension: “You can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian—a criminal—administration in the Oval Office. That’s just not how this works.”
And that isn't what happened here either. Refer to 47 CFR § 73.1217 regarding broadcast hoaxes. Licensees may NOT broadcast false information about a crime or catastrophe. And insiders have said Kimmel was going to just double down on his lies. Combined with cratering ratings, money losses, and public outcry, of course Kimmel was going to be gone.

(a) No licensee or permittee of any broadcast station shall broadcast false information concerning a crime or a catastrophe if:
(1) The licensee knows this information is false;
(2) It is foreseeable that broadcast of the information will cause substantial public harm, and
(3) Broadcast of the information does in fact directly cause substantial public harm.
(b) Any programming accompanied by a disclaimer will be presumed not to pose foreseeable harm if the disclaimer clearly characterizes the program as a fiction and is presented in a way that is reasonable under the circumstances.
(c) For purposes of this rule, “public harm” must begin immediately, and cause direct and actual damage to property or to the health or safety of the general public, or diversion of law enforcement or other public health and safety authorities from their duties. The public harm will be deemed foreseeable if the licensee could expect with a significant degree of certainty that public harm would occur. A “crime” is any act or omission that makes the offender subject to criminal punishment by law. A “catastrophe” is a disaster or imminent disaster involving violent or sudden event affecting the public.
Say what you will about him, Cruz is brilliant, and his knowledge of constitutional law is second to none.
I appreciate Ted speaking up...but for the wrong reasons...his position is focused on Carr's statments being 'bad for conservatives'. Despite his 'second to none knowledge of constitutional law, he fails to even mention the First Amendment.
Quote:
“But let me tell you: If the government gets in the business of saying, ‘We don’t like what you, the media, have said. We’re going to ban you from the airwaves if you don’t say what we like,’ that will end up bad for conservatives.”
“Going down this road, there will come a time when a Democrat wins again – wins the White House … they will silence us. They will use this power, and they will use it ruthlessly. And that is dangerous,”
“And it might feel good right now to threaten Jimmy Kimmel. But when it is used to silence every conservative in America, we will regret it.”
Conservatives will regret it...liberals will regret it...and all those in between...we'll all regret it. And it's unconstitutional

what's unconstitutional? free speech is not an absolute right. never was.
if Kimmel wants to go stand on a street corner and yell his liberal titties off he still can't say any fucking thing he wants to.
1st amendment free speech is not a defense from slander/libel and making threats.
and it's not a defense for Kimmel to intentionally make false and misleading statements.

And he also said,
“He says, ‘We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way.’ And I got to say, that’s right out of ‘Goodfellas.’ That’s right out of a mafioso coming into a bar going, ‘nice bar you have here. It’d be a shame if something happened to it.’”
Cruz later added: “I think it is unbelievably dangerous for government to put itself in the position of saying, ‘We’re going to decide what speech we like and what we don’t, and we’re going to threaten to take you off air if we don’t like what you’re saying.’”
And what's he supposed to say? Democrats and the left censored free speech on college campuses and social media. Ted and I take to heart the words of Michelle Obama, "When they go low, we go high." Republicans should not respond in kind. However Trump and a majority of the party disagree, as you can tell from posts in this thread. Cruz's "bad for conservatives" comments are to remain relevant. He doesn't want to get primaried.
... You seem lost with this ABC issue, mate.
With yer jibes and insults to me aside.
... See? ... Kimmel knew his statement was a lie.
And so did ABC/Disney - who told him to apologise....
I'm lost? Or seem to be? Please tell. You have some note written on a cocktail napkin that ol Jimmy was gonna pull of some grand hoax or something? Post it. Until then, keep *speculating*. We all know that is the coin of the realm in the PS on eccie.

Hey! I don't call your stuff garbage since I know it's your treasure. But that's the value you place on it.
And as with NaCl-y, you speculate about something being a lie. That really isn't the point, thanks to TxDot putting out the rules, which we know maggies don't like to follow or feel abide to obey. And funny you treat your feelings as fact. Not acceptable in a court of law (yet) that I know. And I have only posted *one* remark that I don't think was from family but someone close to family. That was that the shooter at one time liked the guy he shot. Strange love. But as I say and maggies deny to the extreme: they eat their own.
Keep whining about insults. I'll listen to them when you do a tally of them from everyone here. I really don't care. Because that is at the whole source of this thread. A guy exercising 1st A rights. And how y'all maggies still love the guy who TACO'd it.

Jimmy Kimmel Asked to Apologize and Pay Charlie Kirk's Family if He Wants Suspension Lifted by Nation's Largest ABC Affiliate
The media company Sinclair wants Kimmel to apologize to Kirk's family and make a "meaningful personal donation" to them and Kirk's nonprofit Turning Point USA
Jimmy Kimmel has been given a list of demands to return to air by Sinclair, the broadcasting company with the nation's largest ABC affiliate group
The requests come after ABC "indefinitely" pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air after the host's recent comments about Charlie Kirk, the conservative political commentator who was killed on Sept. 10

Sinclair, the broadcasting company that makes up the nation's largest ABC affiliate group, is giving a list of demands for Jimmy Kimmel to return to air following the show being "indefinitely" pulled.
The media company said in a press release on Wednesday, Sept. 17, that it "objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the assassination of Charlie Kirk" and, after discussions with ABC, made the decision to "indefinitely preempt" Jimmy Kimmel Live! beginning that night.
"Mr. Kimmel's remarks were inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country," Sinclair vice chairman Jason Smith said in a statement. "We believe broadcasters have a responsibility to educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities."
You have in the past had no qualms about libbys swallowing a turd. Jimmy refused to. Sinclair wants jimmy to kiss their ass so they don't have to because that guy who has his thumb on the FCC guy won't let a future deal they have go through because it bruised his wittle ego.

As with charlie, who cares what ted sez? well, ted seems to agree it was a shakedown. Yes, they have a right to say stuff. But we have a right not to listen to garbage (but it is treasure to their own ears.)
