Does anyone else hate the word "hobby"?

Was reading about post WWI independents in Germany and they went by "fohses", but I wouldn't know how to pronounce the word!

I'm with most of you--I've never liked either term. To me, "hobbyist" conjures up the image of a man who has posted hundreds of reviews of ladies. I suppose in such an instance, it could be considered a hobby for him. However, for the gent who sees a lady a few times a year or forges a relationship with a special lady, the label just doesn't fit. I would prefer "patron" or even "suitor" be used in such instances.

However, because like most of the ladies here, I usually end up having an ongoing relationship with the men I meet, so I simply refer to them as friends.

As for the ladies, I like the term "gentleman's companion" or "escort." When talking with others ladies in this little world, I have never heard any of them refer to their callers as "hobbyists" or "customers" (ugh...that one bothers me too!) but always "patrons" or "clients," sometimes "gentlemen friends." And the ladies refer to themselves as "gentleman's companion," "escort" or "courtesan."

On a side note, I recently viewed a video by a woman who was expressing her disappointment in the DA conference and how she was treated. She referred to herself as a "hooker" and to the men who visit with her as "tricks." It literally made me cringe. I know there is a history behind those words but they come across as incredibly insulting to me.

"patron" "suitor" - sure that would feel better than ""hooker" (or the gent's equiv.)....but don't lose sight of what you do. You can call it whatever you want....at the end of the day it is still P4P....

Exactly! As I said, they're all just words, just like sh*t versus defecation. They all mean the same thing, but many of us simply choose certain words over others. Not to make anyone or ourselves "feel better," it's a choice. I certainly wouldn't label the man I travel with monthly as a "trick."

Additionally, I feel the energy behind certain words makes a difference. I know a lady here who labels herself a hooker, but the energy when she states this is matter-of-factfact and not negative. The prior lady I mentioned in the video practically spewed the words "hookers" and "tricks" out (along with saying that she hates being a hooker) so it had a very different vibe.

So essentially, you and I agree. We choose to call "it" whatever we want at the end of the day, although it all essentially means the same thing.

Patron or friend are my preferred terms for my gentlemen callers. As for myself, i usually prefer companion, courtesan or escort.

FWIW, When I haved posted here, I wan't happy or comfortable with the various terms that we apply to each party here. I liked courtesan the most. There is an elegance to the term. As to the gentleman here and a moniker, I do like playmate (though I would not refer to myself as that), gentleman friend or just friend, or a date.

Very true Lynette, I have always hated labels.What we experience as escorts, and the men who enjoy them just varies way too much to ever put a label on it. On Monday I may be someone's nasty little slut ,on Friday I could easily be another's well mannered ,mature,companion. Now for the rest of the week....well I can just be kind of pathetic lol

The same is true for clients.If he is someone I am meeting for the first few times I will usually refer to him as my client. When we have known each other for a while I prefer to see him as a friend.

You are right, I think that is why so many of us have a problem with those two words , but not the many other ones that have been used to describe us.

Welcome to the first issue of Whore! magazine. In the pages of this and future issues, we will be exploring the many aspects of a heavily loaded term, the use of which can range from the most offensive denigration to humorous self-depreciation to an expression of affectionate admiration. In exploring what we mean when we say “whore,” we’ll be looking at subjects as diverse as the history of vibrators, the implications of hipster stripping, the intricacies of menstruation rituals, and the wild ways of onetime United States presidential candidate Victoria Woodhull.

The word “whore” calls to mind biblical fury, low-end streetwalkers, crack addicts, and that girl at the party who flirts with everyone. With a little more consideration, thoughts might turn to the high school slut or the chick who borrowed your favorite dress and never returned it.

That’s all old school. In recent years the word has gone through some creative revisions. “Corporate Whore” was coined to describe those who exploit others for personal gain in the workplace. “Dork Whore,” “Food Whore,” “Shoe Whore,” and “Shopping Whore” are a few of any number of related epithets used by many to describe themselves and others, implying that consuming anything in excess has a potentially delicious hue of shame. The word, however, is as old as the gods (or at least some of their earliest linguistic references) and its proto-Germanic root, *khoraz (fem. *khoron) means “one who desires.” We at Whore! magazine propose that the meaning of the word be returned to its venerable origins, at least for the purposes of these pages.

Desire has driven civilization. Historically, many women have earned the title of whore for daring to engage in such masculine pursuits as getting an education, providing medical care to the underprivileged, leading an army, or just going out in public in a very dashing tuxedo. “Fags,” “dykes,” and “queers” have also been a part of this history, dancing with the whores and just as often condemned. While their battles still rage, in many places they’ve succeeded in claiming their identity and owning the words that were once used to demean them.

Whore! magazine neither condones nor judges. Instead we are dedicated to exploring those extraordinarily flawed, devilishly ambitious, and wickedly mercurial individuals who refuse to live what Thoreau so aptly described as “lives of quiet desperation.” Societal expectations haunt us all. There are those, or so some say, who have succeeded in the realms of love, family, and career, and have navigated these waters with the virtues of grace, humility, and always maintaining a pleasant manner remaining intact. The rest of us have been a bit messier. We pop pills, we fall for inappropriate partners, we stay up too late, we get fired, we have affairs, we lie, and we struggle with guilt, madness, depression, and apathy. We bitch, we piss off our families, we talk too loud, we go outside without makeup on—or we go out with too much on. We forget to be empowered and sometimes we care too deeply what others think of us. Along this bumpy road, we give and receive love, experience transcendence, feel joy, and sometimes we even change the world. With all of this, in other times today’s woman would almost invariably have been dismissed as a whore.

Whore! magazine is dedicated to those who have defied all expectations and made such a difference that they had to be cast aside. It creates a rare space where we can expose and celebrate who we really are.
