Social media sites are simply another avenue in which to attract attention. The draw may be positive or negative. If anyone is considering taking this route, I would strongly advise them to do their homework and know exactly what the pitfalls, if any, are, or what they might be.
Could it be an effective tool in which to promote ones self? Certainly.
The real question is, do you really want to draw all of that public attention to yourself?
Remember, there's a huge difference between exposing yourself publicly and exposing yourself in a hobby environment. The biggest difference between the two, is typically a click or two on the mouse....and generally, that makes all the difference in the world.
Use your head. Hobby safely.
