Most of the time, suicidal people just need someone to talk to, but most people don't know how to engage in conversation or they simply do not want to. For example, it is consider bad practice to tell a suicidal person not to kill themselves, because you're not engaging with them if you are just telling them what to do. The first thing people want to do is give advice, which serves to disconnect from the person and invalidate his or her feelings. Isn't life pretty shitty?
