Default Good Hobby Phone

I am on the hunt for a good Hobby phone. I would like unlimited talk, text and web browsing are important (ECCIE, BP etc need to be accessed). I probably won't use it that for talk and text but browsing is a must.

I am looking at cost and ease of use. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE HELPFUL!!?

You can't go wrong with Cricket or Boost.

Cricket and Boost are good but so is a pre-paid Tmobile phone or a tracphone.

Go ahead and spend $100 for the 300 minute/1 year card. You don't want to be reloading the damn phone every 90 days.

Be very careful about the data rates. They're usually not unlimited, and they're a royal ripoff.

Even some that claim to be unlimited data aren't. If you go over a certain amount of data, they'll start charging you, or cut off or slow down your service.

I have the same question. Can you go to cricket and start a plan with no ID? I just don't see the point in a hobby phone if you still have to give personal info to start a plan. I had cricket broadband internet through my job and I was happy with the speed. by the way, it is not unlimited like they say. If you look at the fine print they will give you 5gb download per month and if you go over that they will cut your speed to dial-up.

If you want real web browsing and easy access email I'd go with an iphone or good smartphone connected through tmobile prepaid. It should work perfect for hobbying on the go. Pulling up ads, pics, and email while weaving through Houston traffic.

The only thing is I don't know if tmobile requires an id to sign up for their prepaid service.

Another way would be to do your browsing and emailing on your personal iphone or other smartphone and then do your calling and texting on your anonymous cricket/boost/tracphone.

Anybody have any experience using skype over a mifi connection?

No ID needed for Boost or Cricket. "I forgot my ID at home" Just remember the info you give them in case you ever have a problem.

May want to try a Walmart "Straight Talk" phone, No ID needed (that is what I have). I have their cheapest phone so web access sucks in my phone, but one of their more expensive phone may be just what you need.

For the plan $45 USD gets you Nationwide coverage, coast to coast. No Activation, reactivation, cancellation, daily access or overage fees.

30 Day Plan
Unlimited Minutes & Unlimited Text Messages Nationwide
Unlimited of Mobile Web Access (on Mobile Web Access enabled phones)
Calls to 411 at no additional charge

With straight talk do you have to use your given name?

I use google voice for my hobby phone, but that's not good for what you need.

Anyone else use google voice? My only concern is it's link to me via my gmail account. I don't know if that should be a major concern or not.

No, you do not have to register anything unless you want to sign up for automatic refills.

I paid cash for the phone, pay cash for the refill cards, you activate the phone without having to give any personal information to activate it.

No, they do not. Just pay cash and re-name yourself John Smith.

Default Cricket?

Just saw Cricket's new ad for unlimited talk & text for $25 per month!

Don't think you can beat that.

Good luck!
