Talking Thank Goodness Someone Told Me!

I'm sure you believed something to be a certain way for the longest time until you either found out by accident or someone actually told you how it really is.

Three examples come to mind for me....was wondering if anyone else would like to share things they thought were one way, til someone set them straight?

Example #1). Growing up Catholic, I went to church and had my first Penance as a young girl. I did my confession and well...the rest of the family did also. Everyone was done doing what they were supposed to do (at the church) except for me. I was still kneeling...for quite some time too. Dad finally asked me what's taking so long? I said, "I'm supposed to do Three Hour Fathers." He said, "Not for 3 Hours....but just 3 Our Fathers". I was so embarrassed that had had been praying for longer than I needed to. How hilarious! I'm glad he told me. I'd hate to have gone through life not knowing the proper TITLE of the actual prayer.

Example #2). For the longest time, I always thought that the names after a song on an album, were the ones who sang the song. So for example, on the Beatles...if the song said Lennon, I assumed John was singing. If it said McCartney, then Paul...etc. If it wasn't for my brother telling me that they are the ones who WROTE the song, I'd forever be wondering why only 2 of the 4 members of my favorite band never seemed to be singing any songs. That also made sense because I'd notice that even though I knew there was a lead singer, it still sounded like HE was singing on a song that I thought someone else was supposed to be singing lead on.

Example #3). Music related again. So many songs growing up always had time lengths of somewhere between 2 minutes and maybe 3 at most. (ie. 2:43, 2:21, 2:50, etc.) I always wondered why the music industry always seemed to RECORD music at 2 in the afternoon. It never occurred to me that it was the length of the song.

Does anyone else have any other stories to share?

Sometime around 1985 I was introduced to Lotus 1-2-3. I read the instruction manual and taught myself how to utilize the program. As I struggled with the intricacies of spreadsheet, I was initially befuddled by the command prompt: “Save Changes”. I cannot recall how many times I clicked “No” because I didn’t want what I had typed “changed” before I realized the command prompt meant “Save [your work with] Changes [you just made]”.

Again, many years ago, a friend of mine really hated Corey Hart’s song: “Sunglasses At Night”. These are the lyrics:

I wear my sunglasses at night / so I can / so I can / Watch you weave then breath your story lines. / And I wear my sunglasses at night

What my friend thought she heard is:

I wear my sundresses at night / so I can / so I can / Watch you weave then breath your story lines. / And I wear my sundresses at night

She just thought it was deplorable that a song about cross-dressing could get so much airplay.

When I found out that Jessus was not actually born at Christmas time, it was overwhelming!

And that Columbus did 'discover' anything...I couldn't believe that there were vikings here first!
