As to "betraying the military", well I distinctly remember for the shutdown last time, and for the one in the VN era, having a lot of young military and young civilians working for me--and making many phone calls to landlords, utility cos, etc., trying to get some time for the kids to pay since they in turn were not going to get paid. To their credit, most the people I called understood and were cooperative. And back then the "military family" was more of a real thing--I had a young couple move into my place for a few weeks because their landlord was not one of the understanding ones--and others in the organization did the same.
