Default Nebraska is “Closed”

With all the floodig going on n the eastern part of the state, travel is being restricted west of Omaha and in both directions on I-29 heading north of Omaha to Missouri.Valley and south of Omaha on I-29 to the Missouri state line. If you are coming to and from Omaha until mid week, the roads and areas next to the Missouri, Platte and Elkhorn rivers are impassible. Travel with caution. Another round of blizzard-like conditions is predicted for March 24-25, especially in western Nebraska, Kansas, the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas and eastern Colorado along the east range east of I-25.

The water should go down in the next couple days on all but the Missouri River, so the water will be off the highways, but that doesn't mean the road will open. I know Highway 81 south of Columbus is completely tore up from water running over the road. Also some bridges may be undermined. Best bet is to check this website http://511.nebraska.gov for road conditions. It is the official site from the Nebraska Department of Roads. It will also tell you construction projects on the roads.

The detour is literally take I-80 to I-35.

It's that bad. Crest on the Missouri is anticipated to exceed records set by the floods of 1993.

The Air Force Base gave up sandbagging.

Also helpful is this hydrograph link that shows current flood levels along with predicted flood levels over time.

Since you were coming up from KC, and using I-29, those flooding conditions were from a second and third round of flooding as a result of additional rain and the release of river water from the Gavins Point Dam up in northeastern Nebraska/southeastern South Dakota along the Missouri River. Not as severe as the flooding earlier in the spring but still causing havoc for farmers that haven’t been able to plant crops this year.
