My one regret in life is not serving.

I am humbled in the presence of those who do. Thank you all and may you be forever remembered for all you do for us.

The OP is right--there are probably more, but for some of us, answering that question now might be indiscreet.

A girl I dated right after high school had a dad who was a merchant marine.

The United States Merchant Marine is the fleet of U.S. civilian-owned merchant vessels, operated by either the government or the private sector, that engage in commerce or transportation of goods and services in and out of the navigable waters of the United States. The Merchant Marine is responsible for transporting cargo and passengers during peacetime. In time of war, the Merchant Marine is capable of being an auxiliary to the Navy, and can be called upon to deliver military personnel and materiels for the military. The Merchant Marine however, does not have a role in combat, although a merchant mariner has a responsibility to protect cargo carried aboard his or her ship.

"Merchant Marine" is also code for "SPOOK" during 'Nam. Annie, what you might not know is Dad may have worked for The COMPANY and thus unable to speak of it. Or he could have worked for civvie owned, government run transport ops when military ships couldn't dock at certain foreign ports for carrying undocumented, classified cargo. Plenty of those in Asia in the late 60's-70's. It was just after Korea ended. Or he could have been just what Dave said.

And Bamacoach, ever go R&R in Olongapo City?

And to all who served, living or gone, still serving, in or out of uniform. A heartfelt THANK YOU.
