Default eccie.net and google

One thing I do not like is that eccie shows up on google.

I would think that the discretion is more important that the one or two members that show up here via search engines.

I am afraid there is very little that can be done as far as restricting Google from indexing the pages on this site. FYI, there is a Google Spider that for all practical purposes is a permanent guest on this site and any other public forum.

It is the nature of the world wide web. On private sites there are some scripts that they can use to minimize exposure but not so here.

Do you want to freak out a little more? Just so that you will know, I did a Boolean search on Google to see what has been indexed so far.

First search:

"big jake" + "eccie.net"

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&r...22&btnG=Search

Second Search:

"matador" + "eccie.net"

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&r...22&btnG=Search

What they say about not posting something you don't want others to know about is true. Now relax and enjoy the site. Just remember to not post anything that you want to keep secret.

Take care,

Matador

Dang I just did Matador + aspd.net and came up with the same thing. I guess that's the way Google researches the websites for search engine placement.

Good thing it doesn't connect us to a real name or address, huh? I'm ok with my handle being on google i guess.

Just modify your robots.txt file if you want to stop spiders.

That would probably only delay the growth that forums such as this one wish to achieve. ECCIE.net is growing at a commendable pace but there is no need for them to obstruct the indexing of the site.

I did a Google search for dallas escort reviews

http://www.google.com/search?q=dalla...8&start=0&sa=N

and another one for dallas escort

http://www.google.com/search?q=dalla...8&start=0&sa=N

I clicked through seven pages of results on both searches and got bored because I could not find a result for ECCIE in the first 70 returns on the search.

Let's keep things simple here. Things posted on the web are not private. The sooner we adopt that reality, the better we will be able to determine how involved we get in this playground, and how much individual exposure we are willing to "risk" ( yes, there is always risk in this hobby).

Asking the owners to avoid being indexed by search engines is the equivalent to asking them to please sabotage their business goals, after all THIS IS A BUSINESS venture and it needs to succeed. The best thing we as members can do is support the owners and staff and actively participate in making this forum a better place.

The entire hobby community needs a place like this to take off. The state of Texas is heavily dependent on ASPD and lately (as in since earlier in the morning and as I type this reply, it is down) it has not been very reliable. We have had 15 registrations so far today and I would venture to say that most of those new members found out by email exchanges and not by results on a Google search. Heck there are many independent providers whose escort sites turn up much higher on a Google search than this site. So relax and let the search engines do their tasks while we enjoy continuous growth here. As I have said in a previous post before, the more information there is on this site, the more I am going to like it

Relax everyone and enjoy, and remember to stay safe,

Matador

I was not trying to say that ECCIE should NOT index the site, just correcting your assertion that it could not be avoided. Perhaps I read your post incorrectly.

Actually you did not read my post incorrectly, it was I who did not word the reply to the OP in a correct way. In trying to apply an advice given to me on another thread about making my posts shorter, I left out a big chunk of the original thought. Needless to say, I did not elaborate enough, and as such my post reads incorrectly. Thanks for the correction. We need to do what we can so that we do not spread misinformation.

I'll continue working on the posts and maybe I will get the right combination one of these days

Come on Guys! Speak English. What does this mean to a guy born in Ft. Worth?

TFF, Chipper!

Translation:
The techie that sets things up can tweak one of the web server files called robot.txt which tells search engine robots not to surf and index the site's contents or portions of it.

Effect:
It helps keep the boards contents from showing up in search engines increasing privacy. However, if the owners want to grow the site and profit from it, the search engines are necessary to bring traffic to the site.

Looks like Captcha should be installed too. Getting some spam registrations now.

I agree that eccie needs to be indexed in Google.

However, it might be worthwhile using the NOARCHIVE directive. I think it has to go into a META tag on each web page, rather than in the robots.txt file.

This would have the advantage that when the staff deletes or edits a post, it would not be copied to "honest" web archives. For instance, Google often displays a cached copy of deleted info from web pages.

BTW, do we have a 30 day limit on threads here? I thought we decided not, but if I'm wrong, apologies all around.

I've actually never understood why it was considered A Good Thing to have any hobby site indexed by search engines and other web crawlers. (Never understood why ASPD didn't have a robots.txt file that excluded robots entirely, either.)

The explanation I'd always heard was that it was important for growing the member base for people to be able to find the site in Google. But I just wonder - how many of the people who find their way to sites like these, find them via search engines? My gut feeling is that it's not many at all (though I have no actual data to back that up, I could certainly be wrong).

My personal feeling is that, if that's actually the case (and yes, this depends on my assumption above being correct...), the small benefit conferred by people being able to find the site via a search engine is far outweighed by the the risk of (for instance) people being able to use Google to dig up the contents of a thread that was pulled by staff for security reasons, to find previous handles of people who've had to change their handle for security reasons, etc.

Of course, this all also depends on a web crawler being "well behaved" and actually honoring the Robot Exclusion Protocol (via robots.txt).

I think a lot more than you think. Like you I have no hard data just annecdotal evidence. I for one found "these sites" via a search engine. Something like "Dallas Escorts" lol

This "hobby" really isn't something most newbies talk about with a buddy over a round of golf or a beer and give/get a referral.

Well, I sometimes picture in my mind some of the poor lost souls using Craigslist, Backpage, etc. being smart enough to Google the lady's phone number and finding salivation here.
