Left side, under Main Menu select User CP, now under settings and options choose Edit Avatar, scroll down, choose Custom Avatar, Option 2, press browse and select the picture on your computer you want to upload.

For avatars use a JPG image that is no larger than 150 pixels on any of the four sides. The following is a link to a very good and easy to use free program to reduce an image to a size suitable as an avatar.
