Default Conservative victory in Australia.

The left was shocked by their defeat...sound familiar.
The headline...the left lost the "UNLOSEABLE" election!!

Seems like the left across the world keeps losing these “unloseable” elections and yet they learn absolutely no lessons other than doubling down.

This is a priceless line from the losing party...

"But we ran our campaign primarily on climate change legislation and wealth redistribution, how did we lose?" Australia's Labor Party mused to themselves, befuddled at the surprise outcome of the election.

That was former PM Tony Abbott’s seat. He was given the boot as PM pretty shortly after he became it so it could just be that the Tories were unenthusiastic and didn’t bother providing him much support. May have been a sacrificial lamb but I could see him returning next go around.

The main message is you don't fuck with people's bread and butter. Australia exports huge amounts of coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Labor Party was counting on flipping seats in the state of Queensland, the big coal exporting state. Instead they lost there because of their support for lower carbon emissions. They weren't going after the exports per se, but people didn't trust them, in large part because the state Labor Party in Queensland had held up a new coal mining project that would have created many new jobs.

Labor's message of higher taxes and higher energy costs didn't resonate with the electorate. Double taxation of dividends was a big issue with pensioners. If Australian corporations pay tax at the corporate level, unlike in the USA the shareholders don't have to pay again when they receive dividends. The old folks were up in arms about this so called "dividend franking", which Labor wanted to end.

There's a lesson here for Beto O'Rourke. He probably kissed his chances goodbye of ever holding a statewide office in Texas with his plan to cut net carbon emissions to "0". How many jobs would be lost in the oil and gas industry in Texas if that happens? Answer: A lot
