Default $500 ?

This post probably belongs in the Diamonds & Tuxedos forum but I will post it here because I like you people.

I have been told by bank tellers that there ACTUALY IS such a thing as a $500 dollar bill, athough they were unable to provide me with one.

Has anyone here ever seen one? Where would you get it? Whose face is on the bill?

I think a $500 bill would be a neat gift for the lady, although with my luck, she would probably think it was fake, mace me, and boot me out the door!

Quote:
The Federal Reserve began taking high-denomination bills out of circulation in 1969. As of May 30, 2009, there were only 336 of the $10,000 bills in circulation; 342 remaining $5,000 bills; and 165,372 $1,000 bills still being used.[2] Due to their rarity, collectors will pay considerably more than the face value of the bills to acquire them.

On July 14, 1969, officials at the Federal Reserve Board announced that they would immediately stop distributing currency in denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000. Production of these denominations stopped during World War II. Their main purpose was for bank transfer payments. With the arrival of more secure transfer technologies, however, they were no longer needed for that purpose. While these notes are legal tender and may still be found in circulation today, the Federal Reserve Banks remove them from circulation and destroy them as they are received.

Default If you see one, it is a FAKE

The 500 dollar bill was first printed in the year 1928. It has a portrait of the late President William McKinley who is the twenty fifth president of the USA. Unfortunately, the circulation of the said dollar bill was halted by the Federal Reserve System and the Department of the Treasury on the 14th day of July, 1969. This is because of the fact that the 500 dollar bill and other large denomination dollar bills were most of the time being counterfeited and were also being used in drug trafficking. Thus, the Federal Government has arrived at a decision to eliminate the use of five hundred dollar bills in the money circulation in the USA.
Indeed, a 500 dollar bill has once existed in the US currency. It has been used by many Americans to finance some of their needs. Nevertheless, its circulation was halted due to some valid reasons. In this regard, you can now no longer see a 500 dollar bill in the market being used nowadays.

With all the anti-counterfeiting techniques, I'd love to be able to withdraw 500 and ask for a single bill!

Thanks to all who provided a very neat history lesson and especially copierguy for the reproduction.

I have a $500 and $1000 bill. the proplem is it will cost you 10% to 30% premium to get one depending on the condition.

I'm thinking that I might try that next time. Give a $500 bill to as a donation as see if the girl know if it is real....

but I'll be giving her $650. and she will only get $500 when she spends it.

Thanks for the awesome history lesson guys.

I guess I will have to stick to handing out jars of quarters!
(a 2 hour donation can get quite heavy, though!)

I have seen all the large denomination bills, but only on display behind security glass! (They're coveted collectors' items.)

An interesting little factoid is that $500 in 1928 had purchasing power equivalent to $6,379 today. I didn't just pull that number out of a hat; that's according to BLS (U.S. government) tables. That just shows the extent to which the Federal Reserve has debased our fiat currency over the last century.

Here's an interesting experiment to try on someone: Put 3 quarters, 2 dimes, a nickel, and 4 pennies on a table. (That makes it very easy to pick any value between one and ninety-nine cents.) Then ask him to pick up and place aside the amount of change you would have needed in 1970 to equal the purchasing power of one dollar today.

I tried this recently on my 26-year-old nephew, a college graduate with a job in the accounting department of a big company. He initially picked up two quarters and a dime, but then said, "Well, I remember learning in an economics class that there has been a lot of inflation, especially in the 1970s." So then he put down one of the quarters and picked up a nickel, leaving $0.40. That was his final guess.

The answer?

One dime, one nickel, and 3 pennies!

That's right. Eighteen cents just 40 years ago had the same purchasing power as a buck today. Pretty amazing, huh?

But there is a 500 Euro note that is still in circulation.

It is the largest commonly circulated single piece of currency in the world. Worth approximately $619.75.
