Default Speeding ticket

It's been more than 20 years since I got one. Should I worry about it jack up my insurance ? What's the cost of a lawyer to get it dismissed ?
Thanks ya'll

Yes worry.
Find an atty that slamdunks those into defective equipment. Maybe 200/250 for atty plus ticket. Ticket will get marked up a bit though cause that's what happens.
But, call the prosecutor and try do it yourself. You'll have to spend a bit of time on that which is a pia.

I disagree to a point. One speeding ticket for an adult will not likely mess with your rates. There tends to be thresholds on numbers over a certain period of time, but I have never had my rate go up for a ticket. If you get another within a couple years get that amended.

Reasons to ignore my advice are if you have recently switched auto insurance, you have recently accidents, or your speeding ticket was for an absurd speed.

In the next few days you will probably receive several pieces of mail with offerings of legal services. If your ticket is in KCMO, you'll be required to get a lawyer if you want a "diversion". Otherwise, call the prosecutor--you may be able to do it yourself.

In my youth, I was always been able to pay double and get it dropped to some bullshit ticket like littering. This worked for me in Bonner Springs, Lansing, and Shawnee. Just called the city attorney, but that was like 20 years ago.

Depending on which jurisdiction, you might be able to do it yourself. They will change the charge to something like parking on the wrong side of the street or jaywalking. Expect the ticket increase to go up another $75 to almost double. If you want to go the lawyer route, expect to add another $300 to your expenses. I doubt the ticket will increase your insurance. 20 yrs is a good record for being ticketless. Just get it reduced to a non-moving violation. So first thing is I would call the city attorney's office to see if you can handle it yourself. If you can, take your savings and set up an encounter to make things better.

Get the lawyer. Pay the 300 bucks. Trust me. Admitting guilt or pleading no contest will jack your insurance rates, and you’re rates on anything you want to insure for the next few years.

I had gone 20 years without a ticket, and then got two in one year. One in Lansing and one in Platte County.

I just paid the Lansing ticket. All my rates on my cars and boat insurenace went up. I’ve been with my company for a long time, so car insurance increase only lasted a year. But my boat insurance went up 150 bucks a year, and will be for another 2 years.

The Platte County ticket, I called the KC Traffic Lawyer. For 300 bucks, he pled it down to expired registration. A non moving violation. And that 300 was for the fine and his fee. Lesson learned, never just pay it. If you have the means, contest it or hire a lawyer to plead is down.

Thanks for all the inputs Gents, I'll get a lawyer just to be safe.

let us see: 3 years (minimum) on the added boat insurance x $150 per year = $450 minimum just for the boat insurance. So you are ahead $150 plus whatever the added insurance costs for the other items.

Make money; hire a lawyer!

First I would call the prosecutor...ask if you can plea bargain...depending on the city...some will offer it without an attorney. If not get the atty.

Just visit court. See accountant/front desk. Tell her/him that you dont want this ticket on your record. They will tell how much to pay (it will convert to parking). That's it. Had it before. No issue at all.

I don't know how KCMO does it, but I've always been able to just pay an extra amount (usually about double) to get the ticket deferred. So the ticket just gets dismissed after a few months. I would call someone about that, before getting a lawyer. Have a feeling it might be cheaper in the long run.
