Thanks, Chica. For a moment there I thought I was going crazy!

But that really was funny! It must have looked like I was talking to the air.

C'mon, people.

This one, like the Reagan-era ketchup flap before it, is being blown WAY out of proportion. The way the rules are currently written, the school cafeterias CAN'T off pizza once in a while, because of the strict rule about vegetable content. The Reagan-era flap was caused by the desire to be able to offer the Great American hamburger and fries once in a while, which the rules in place at THAT time forbade, for the same reasons.

This whole thing is being blown completely out of proportion.

Lots of parents do feed their kids. Lots can't afford to. 25% of the kids in Texas live in poverty. And it's higher in rural areas like the one I live in. But if you're going to feed them, you should do so in a way to reduce diabetes.

Government is not the devil. I support school lunches and in my district the amount of free lunch breakfast is tied to how much I make. I personally think its an awesome thing to not have hungry kids in school. For some of them that's their only meals of the day.

TexHomoHog, you are a useful idiot.........60% of children get free or subsidized food at school.....60% of people can't afford to feed their children? Don't those who can't afford food qualify for foodstamps? And they still can't afford to feed their kids? .......THE ANSWER FOR THESE PARENTS IS SIMPLE--->TAKE THEIR KIDS AWAY FROM THEM!!!!!!

AS THINGS ARE NOW, THE GOVERNMENT WANTS MORE AND MORE CONTROL OVER YOUR CHILDREN AND LEAVE YOU OUT OF THE PROCESS OF RAISING YOUR OWN KIDS!!!!!! BEFORE YOU KNOW IT YOU WILL ONLY HAVE VISITATION RIGHTS WITH YOUR KIDS, AND THEN ONLY IF YOU TOW THE LINE AND DO WHAT THE LIBERAL FILTH TELLS YOU TOO!!!!!

THEY WANT TO TURN YOUR KIDS INTO LIBERAL ROBOTS, OR USEFUL IDIOTS, IF YOU PREFER THAT TERM............

IS IT A COINCIDENCE, OR JUST ME BEING A PARANOID CONSERVATIVE, BUT DOESN'T PROVIDING KIDS WITH SCHOOL DINNERS CREATE MORE UNIONS JOBS FEEDING DEMOCRAT CAMPAIGN COFFERS?

Do you really object to that? Or would you rather them just pass out the school lunch money and let schools feed the kids crap and pay more in Medicaid funds for diabetic kids? I'd really like to hear an answer to that question.

And if your answer is to eliminate school lunch programs, who do you expect to feed these kids? In FY2010, 37.1M kids are in the program. Do you really think hungry kids learn well? And remember that 85% of these "school lunch" programs include breakfast.
The state should do what it needs to. The federal government should have no role in this.

They could but they don't.

Texas does enough damage just 'teaching' kids. With all the lies and nonsense they learn I fully expect that the State funded lunches would be pork rinds and cheetos or whatever the lobbyists send a free case of that is lined with Hundred Dollar Bills addressed to our esteemed governor pointy boots.

Change over to a voucher system and privatize the schools. I suspect that the schools could feed the kids as well as educate them for what we are spending now. While I expect the results in education will improve dramatically they definitely can't do worse than what we are getting now.

The government is mainly interested in control, not education. If they were interested in education, we would have had vouchers long ago.
