I'm also expecting GRRM to pull a Robert Jordan sometime soon. The dude took forever getting around to writing A Dance with Dragons and now he's spending all his time on the HBO series. Good luck getting another book out of him before he croaks.

He better not!!! I'm totally pissed how the last book ended!

I would bet they monitor public reaction to chracters, and future scripts will be written to satisfy what the public wants to see.
My two favorite movie adaptations I have seen form Novels was The Carpet Baggers and The Godfather. Both took liberties with the originol writings, and both wre really well accepted.
As good as The Godfather was, it lost some of the grim realism contained in Mario Puzo's writing. One good example is the Garroting of Luca Brazi. In the book, the writing was so expecite that you could smell the shit on the floor as his life dwindled and his bowells emptied. The movie scene was almost anticeptic in comparison.

There is no particular rule, but GRRM has been heavily involved with the show since its inception.
There have been some generally positive changes as well, such as the addition of Roz and of course cutting out a lot of the more inconsequential stuff you normally have to wade through, yet still keeping fairly close to the books.

GRRM is 64 now and not exactly the picture of manly constitution. It took him 7 years to write the last book, so you do the math on how many you think he's got left in him. Now, given that the HBO series is so popular, he's going to have to start pooping more books out if he wants to continue the series (or they can go down the True Blood route and just deviate entirely from the books). Of course, the question then becomes how good of a book you think he can write when he's rushing things...

That scene, to me, was completely ruined because just a few episodes prior to that, she had used the same tactic to kill the warlock.
In the books... she killed the warlocks in a different way.... so when she did it against the Unsullied slave owner, it was a complete surprise... buuuut, it was a still a badass episode.
Now for the epic fight between the dog and the Lord Dondarrion...

If I'm recollect correctly.... in the books it hadnt even been revealed by that point that the dragons could blow fire... so when she said "dracarys"... it was a big shocker...
Oh well... still a good show...

Yeah, it was a brief scene where she was teaching them to cook their own food so she didn't have to feed them anymore. Can't expect that kind of thing in the show, though. Sigh.

Yeah, iirc in the books, she got out of the warlock tower because one of the dragons lit some curtains on fire or something.
Dracarys was the first time she actually had them set someone on fire on command, I think.

Finally read back and saw Tyrion going missing mentioned.... I love the books but it's damn hard not having him included when his antics are some of the funnest to read.... they make up with it with having plenty of Arya tho...

Not much of an Arya fan, myself - she's just too insane for my taste.
Jaime becomes a much more interesting character later on in the series, imo.
