I agree with 95% of what you've said here. The thought process is spot on, but I think the the analogy with a racial slur is just a little extreme.

I would say a better analogy would be when someone "African-American" gets offended if someone calls them "Black" or even "Negro" (at the extreme). I'll call you whatever you prefer if I know. Otherwise, I'll defer to what I would prefer or ask you. But, if I want to be called Black and you insist on calling me AA and say that I'm wrong or a sellout or whatever, then I think you're incorrect (and rude).

(For the record, I have a general problem with the term African-American because I don't think you can accurately tell if someone is American by looking at them).

And most of this would be true however we're not exactly congressional's addressing our constituents here soooo let's not kid ourselves that our little deal here is a perfect society.
