Why is the 1st season always the best?

Because the writers and directors put all or most of their creativity into the first season to get it on the air. Second and maybe third seasons can be just as good. After that corporate talking heads want to extend, extend, extend … as they have a proven $$$$maker but usually writers are struggling to come up with fresh concepts using same characters, sets and similar situations. (You can't change a characters whole personality and circumstances … that would be changing money maker too much for the corporate stooges). THUS seasons 3+ usually suffer or they add/remove supporting characters, change some characteristics to become less objectionable, and more palatable to a wider range of audiences.
Case in point Big Bang Theory. Brought in more female cast and changed Howard from a real skeevie guy to one less so and who is now married. Really?? Married?? Please. But to be honest I actually like the girls a bit better, as they lately have been having better story arcs.
In sequels of movies, the corporate stooges have to up the effects. If movie one had one villain movie 2 and 3 must have MORE. Regardless of what the original story material suggested or hinted at.
Sorry, I will get off my soapbox and stop ranting now.

Wow. Having lived in Miami during the 70s I saw a lot of street walkers and some pimps and wannabes.

I thought all of that was gone for the most part, but to see the 'lifestyle' of Chicago's pimps, quite an eye opener.
