Your Fancy Road Alert: I-45 completely closed this weekend from Woodlands Parkway to 242!
Beautiful weekend, people going out to Lake Conroe, maybe up to the Texas-Dallas game in Arlington, perhaps visiting the Woodlands Mall or the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for a concert (favorite provider on your arm, and in your lap later), but please be aware that I-45 in both directions will be closed all the way from Woodlands Parkway through SH 242 tonight to Monday morning.
http://abc13.com/news/texas-242-flyo...eekend/334046/
The Texas Renaissance Festival doesn't start until NEXT Saturday the 11th (the campgrounds open on Friday the 10th), and I hope to leprechaun heck that TDT won't close the road down again then. That would be a complete disaster, as there will be very heavy traffic on opening weekend.
I usually hang out at the Irish Chihuahua Refuge in the deep, dark, spooky woods well northeast of Conroe on weekends and drive back and forth as needed to my Houston incall apartment. This Saturday if any gentlemen want to see a sassy Irish lassie, either let me know TODAY so I can just come up and spend the night, or give me LOTS of notice as the detour via I-59 will be quite lengthy.
Expect a major mess with delays running up to 2 hours. You have been warned.

It was announced last night on the news ...
.....that the "main slab" traffic will be routed to the service roads .....
To get to Fancy's one must exit to the service road anyway.
Heading north? 59 ("69") to Porter, West on FM1314 to Conroe, 336 North (right) around Conroe, and catch 45 ...... if one wants to go to the Lake take 336 "South" (left)

Not going anywhere near it this weekend. Last weekend it was closed heading south. Gosling Road heading south was bumper to bumper from Woodlands Parkway to FM2920. Major suckage if you have to travel that direction.

So is this road work something that is going to be ongoing? I'm always considering a road trip to Houston and this would be good information to know, beforehand.
I was actually considering a personal trip that way in a few weeks. So any information would be appreciated.
Also, is this part of I45 BEFORE you get into the main Houston metroplex or is it past it?
In other words, if I'm driving from Dallas, am I going to get stuck?
Thanks for the head's up, Fancy. This is really good information to be aware of.
Hugs,
Elisabeth

Yes you would be stuck. But probably will be done by the time you leave in a few weeks. I'm going to spring today so I'm no to happy about it.

In other words, if I'm driving from Dallas, am I going to get stuck? I'm on that section 3-4 times a week. It is unpredictable. If I had an option and just wanted to avoid the delays I would probably drive through that area on a rainy day. But rain is also unpredictable!

I45 has been "under construction" in the Houston area for about 30 years.

What they said.....I avoid that fucking stretch even between construction stints.
It's just fucked up around there.

This stretch of I-45 and the one south of The Woodlands and below the Hardy Toll Road entrance near the new Exxon facility are going up pretty fast, but yes, EW, you will hit both bad spots. Only completely closed periodically at night. During the day, alternate lanes get shut off, shifted, whatever, and traffic really crawls at rush hour in both directions. Been a mess for a while for commuters to/from The Woodlands, Conroe, and beyond.
I am making the detour into town this afternoon to my incall. I'm pretty sure I'll need a drink immediately upon parking.

This is to install support beams where the Grand Parkway crosses above I-45. No way to do it without shutting down the freeway.

Yep. It will be great once they get it done, as that was a terribly dangerous intersection, people getting off and on the freeway, trying to get to neighborhoods, Wally*World, the hospital, and the college there.
Took a long time to cut over from I-59 this afternoon. Everybody is detouring that way, and I'll have to do it again later tonight.

That reminds me: Have you seen the low overpass in that area? I've seen rigs arriving and leaving over the years that won't clear it ... unless there is some "alternative routing" on the drawing boards to divert commercial loads.
"We" have some tall loads coming and going.
