I met him on an airplane going from Cincinnati to LA in the mid 80s. Felt like an idiot sitting in 1st class and asking for an autograph. He was very gracious about it as was his wife. He was a boxing as well as a worldwide icon. His matches are the things of legends. I watched boxing myself since the days of The Pabst Blue Ribbon matches on Fridays with my father. As well, I boxed myself in Golden Gloves. He created a style of his own and was perhaps the best athlete ever. RIP.
FYI, he was NOT a draft dodger but rather a draft evader. The Supreme Court exonerated him 8-0. Thurgood Marshal recused himself because he had heard previous cases as a Federal Judge. He was a philanthropist and a social activists. May he rest in peace.

That's called a distinction without a difference. Nine million Americans served during the Vietnam Era, three million of whom served in Vietnam, and 58,000 of those lost their lives. Of course you can't ask the lads on the wall their opinion of your sophistry but I guarantee you the vast majority of men who answered the call do not admire Clay for his treachery. He betrayed his country and he betrayed "his people"; e.g., Joe Frazier and Malcolm X.

Oh, and I met him on several occasions both before and after he dodged the draft and liked him personally; he did show unexpected kindness to a friend of mine...and he was a very funny fellow, even when he wasn't "performing". You couldn't hardly keep from laughing around him.
