I'm in my mid 40s, but I generally do 30 to 40 minutes of weight training, targeting different muscle groups during the week. I then run on the treadmill or outdoors for 2 to 4 miles depending on my time/schedule. I try to do this 4 times per week.
Cross train by having sex with young 20-something year olds to test how your stamina is improving.

Sex.

Sorry SeekingFun, but a one word answer is clearly the best option.

dilbert, consider diverting the gym membership funds to one of your local personal professionals.

What's is your ultimate goal, lets start with that? Then lets take a look at your diet. I am 59 I'll turn 60 in Sept. I work out about 4-5 times a week with guys in their early 30's. I do mainly resistance training either with weights or machines. My goal is mainly to maintain a lean well defined aesthetic physique. Most people have no clue how old I am. It is quite flattering, I am sure genetics plays a role but also what I do in the gym and how I do it. If you really are determined to change the way your body looks you have to make a change in your lifestyle. You can't be a weekend warrior and expect much to happen.

normally I'd agree with you on the sex part.

sex is only part of that equation. you need to be healthy if one wants to go the distance with sex.

lose weight and not look like a pregnant male. I'm between 215-220, it fluctuates between those numbers.

It's been mentioned but I cannot stress the importance of changing your diet. Get rid of all the donuts, microwavable foods, sodas, potato chips, beer etc. You can workout all you want in the gym but if you don't change your diet you're not going to see results. Every now and then, if you want to have a cheat day, it's not going to hurt you. What you are looking to do is get away from eating the junk everyday.

Ok, I can understand your concern about that. First of all don't read books on bodybuilding or take too much advice from one, at least not right now. You have to change your environment in a sense. That means you have to set your bodies thermostat higher and higher. You do this by doing high volume workouts. Kind of get away from the idea of losing fat and concentrate more on building muscle, because the more muscle you build the more fat you can burn. What you are basically going to do is lots of reps and a lot of sets with short rest periods in between sets like 10, 15 maybe 20 seconds. Here's an example lets say you want to do flat bench dumbbell presses, I like doing this. choose a weight that is relatively light and press it 15 to 20 reps and do five sets without changing the poundage. Keep your rest periods rather short, since you're starting out 25-30 seconds is ok. What this does to muscle tissue is you're recruiting more muscle fibers over time to do work, work produces heat within the body causing you to perspire which releases toxins which is what stored fat in the body really is. Secondly don't get treadmills and stair climbers. Do multi jointed lifts like Bench, Military Presses and Dead lifts or squats. These lifts are usually done heavy but for now do some reps with lighter weights and concentrate on form. Weight lifting is the best way to change the body because the muscles are being placed under a demand. As far as your diet, first thing out of the blocks STAY AWAY FROM PROCESSED SUGAR . Eat plenty of veggies and steam them if at all possible. Your protein sources should be alternated between beef, chicken and fish. Try to keep dairy products to a minimum. Things like ice cream, milk and some cheeses cause mucus formation and mucus acidifies the body causing problems. An acid environment in the body brings down your cellular respiration and that's not good, in fact acidity encourages cancer and sugars is what they feed on.Watch your carb intake as well . Essentially what you'll be doing is changing your bodies internal environment and in time it will show externally. I wish you great success.

Kegel has it's benefits no doubt. In time you might be able to piss over a fence, but it won't give you washboard abs.

I am in my 50's. Cannot say it is targeted to an age range but I have been doing Convict Conditioning for about 2 months and have seen serious improvement in functional strength.

If I drop something now I can squat down to pick it up instead of having to take a knee.

I can't say there is nothing better out there, but I have been following Convict Conditioning and getting measurable results. I am able to do something I could not do before I started the routine.

I have seen guys in a gym move heavy iron having big muscles but I am not convinced their strength is functional.

Might I need to graduate to something else at some point? Sure. Even so, if I attain to the master level of this program, being able to do 1 legged squat/1 armed push-up/1 armed pull-up, etc..., I will be in much better shape than I am now.

Alaine's kegel suggestion is a good one for 50's, even though someone shot it down, because weak pelvic floor can cause many problems including with the activities that brought us here.
