WHY SHOULD WE be sending lawyers to "establish legal grounds for them to remain in the US" though? ISN'T that doing the opposite of what Trump said he'd be sending the troops there to do? STOPPING THEM GETTING IN?

The glass is half full or half empty. It's still 1/2 and 1/2.
Let's say that "we" sent lawyers to the border with the "mission" of "keeping folks out" then the whining, snotty nosed Liberals, who are still choked up about 2016 and want more voters they can bribe with the working class tax money while they jet around like Menendez and Al Gore, not to mention Obaminable and Clinton, would whine about the "bias" of the administration. There is one set of lawyers to keep them out and one set of lawyers to keep them in and a judge in between to resolve any conflicts. Some call that "due process"!
Generally speaking and from some personal knowledge, lawyers in the military are accustomed to working both sides of the fence, and occasionally work the fence. Personally, I'd rather have a military lawyer than a tree-hugger.
